WWE: Why Backstage Heat Should Be Dealt With Differently

This article adresses why WWE should change the way they punish their stars for having ‘backstage heat’.

Backstage heat has been around for decades. And it’s been a way for the WWE to essentially punish Superstars for behaving badly, however, on a much grander stage. The old saying, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know, hold very true for backstage heat.

It usually results in Superstars not getting pushed, or worse, fired. You can mostly tell when someone’s got backstage heat. They may be missing from TV, involved in a segment which makes them look incredibly stupid, or playing jobber for however long the heat takes to die down.

The way the WWE deals with backstage heat – punishing Superstars live on air – is stupid and immature. Moreover, it’s also a form of bullying (which JBL seems to know a lot about). The fact that the WWE are punishing their Superstars, who they want to profit on – making them look absurd, and killing their credibility – is ludicrous.

As far as I know, only the wrestling industry (most notably WWE), does this with their talent. If an athlete in a sport team has a falling out with one of the players or a coach, they’re sidelined. However, unlike WWE, they’re not told to take part and make themselves look stupid on purpose. The whole idea of burying your talent on-air, for making a mistake or having a falling out, is insane.

A man who knows all too much about backstage heat right now is Baron Corbin. The exact reason for his heat could be a matter of a few things, however, PWInsider claim that it stems from a incident at a talent meeting.

During the meeting, WWE had Dr. Joseph Maroon, who heads the company’s Wellness Policy, speak about the importance of concussion-related injuries to the talent; why they should report them to WWE management as soon as possible. Corbin reportedly cut-off Dr. Maroon, and began arguing with the doctor about concussions in the NFL. It was matter of Corbin thinking he was right, and the doctor being wrong.

Being a former NFL player, Corbin should have the right to disagree, however, he probably shouldn’t have butted in. According to the source, people in the meeting found it “awkward”, furthermore, “an awkward moment that led to awkward laughter”.

However, because of this, Corbin has since been buried live on-air. That’s right, he’s been made to look like a fool for arguing with a doctor about concussions. I know, maybe he shouldn’t have raised his voice during a meeting, and carried himself with more class. However, it seems stupid to devalue a character just over a petty spout.

Moving forward, the WWE shouldn’t be bullying their talent and making them look like idiots just over a disagreement or falling out. They should be talking the approach of resolving the issue with talent, or what’s more, taking them aside to explain that they should keep their mouth shut when in a meeting. It’s not that hard, it is? And if that doesn’t work, maybe they should just bring back wrestling court?

Joking aside, the issue really needs to resolved. It also explains why talent often say they feel like they’re ‘walking on eggshells’ in the WWE. Scared to raise their voice in fear that they may have backstage heat, and consequently, be punished on TV. It really isn’t a good look, on both the Superstars and WWE, and it need changing.
