NJPW: Chris Jericho Will Face Kenny Omega At Wrestle Kingdom 12
WWE legend Chris Jericho and NJPW’s IWGP United States Champion Kenny Omega have been trading barbs over Twitter this past month, and the back-and-forth will build to a huge match at Wrestle Kingdom 12.
When WWE star Chris Jericho and NJPW star Kenny Omega first started going at it on Twitter, most people caught on pretty quickly that this is a work. Jericho and Omega both bill themselves from Winnipeg and undoubtedly have the utmost respect for each other. However, they managed to build an enticing rivalry by using Indy vs. WWE arguments, bringing in the likes of Roman Reigns into the crossfire with their insults.
Most people assumed that Jericho was doing this in order to work a program with Omega on his cruise, which will already boast Bullet Club members the Young Bucks and Marty Scurll in a “Sea of Honor” tournament presented by Ring of Honor.
However, others wondered if Omega and Jericho could somehow have a dream match at NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom 12. That seemed slightly far-fetched, but it looks like this will be the case.
At NJPW’s Power Struggle pay per view, Omega successfully defended his IWGP United States Championship against Beretta, and then promptly asked for challengers. Nobody responded until Jericho came in, called himself the best wrestler in the world, and added that he is the “alpha” to Kenny’s “omega”. He said that the two need to go at it, and Omega accepted Y2J’s challenge for a match at Wrestle Kingdom 12.
This should be a classic, as Jericho put on excellent matches with Kevin Owens for the WWE’s United States Title before going on another hiatus from the company. Jericho, by the way, is allowed to wrestle in NJPW, because he is technically a free agent and not a full-time contractor with the WWE at this stage of his career.
Before Jericho challenged Omega for the United States Championship, fans speculated that “The Cleaner” could face Kota Ibushi in a different type of dream match at WK12. Ibushi vs. Omega will have to wait for another day, and Jericho-Omega has more potential as far as being a mainstream attraction goes.

Wrestle Kingdom 11 was insane last year thanks to the ground-breaking match between Kazuchika Okada and Omega, but with matches like Okada vs. Tetsuya Naito and Omega-Jericho on the card, WK12 could be just as bold of a statement from NJPW to the rest of the professional wrestling world.
