Rey Mysterio: ‘Big Possibility That I Will Be Back’ In WWE

Rey Mysterio is one of professional wrestling’s biggest icons, and he made quite the splash when he entered the WWE’s 2018 Royal Rumble from the No. 27 spot. Could Mysterio make his actual return to a WWE ring soon?

Yesterday, colleague Trace Johnson penned a piece about Rey Mysterio, arguing that the WWE needs the former three-time world champion back in the fold. PW Insider reported shortly after the Rumble that although Rey’s appearance was meant as a one-off, the sides have had “on and off” talks. The sticking point? Rey wants to work a part-time schedule, whereas the WWE would like to receive his services full-time.

It’s understandable why the WWE would like to have Mysterio on board on a full-time basis. Not only is Rey incredibly talented, but the WWE knows that its fans bristle at the notion of someone being a part-timer, potentially even somebody as universally loved as Mysterio.

Meanwhile, it’s even more understandable as to why Mysterio would only like to wrestle part-time. He’s 43, and his history of knee issues are well-documented.

Despite the disagreement on the specifics, Mirror Sport recently interviewed Mysterio, who said there is a “big possibility” he will return to a WWE ring.

"“I want to say that there is a big possibility that I will be back. [We’re] figuring out what the situation is, you know from both ends. But there is definitely a positive feedback on behalf of the fans, on behalf of the WWE staff and behalf of myself man.I think we’re possibly going to sit down and negotiate something where we can both work together and have a good time and enjoy.”"

We’ve heard rumors linking Mysterio and the WWE for months now, so there’s always been mutual interest in getting something done. Mysterio’s Rumble return was viewed a whopping 11 million times on YouTube, and the WWE took advantage of this by uploading a video of his ten greatest WWE moments, which has garnered 2.2 million views thus far.

Mysterio’s popularity is obvious, and even PW Insider noted in the above article that the “pop” he received caught the WWE’s attention backstage. Everyone is already talking about potential dream matches for Rey in WWE, including the man himself, who posted a picture on Instagram teasing a match against current WWE Champion AJ Styles “one day”.
