Ten Wrestlers We’d Like to See in Mae Young Classic 2018
By Harmony Cox
HOLIDEAD
We need characters, right? Holidead is one of the biggest characters in the indies right now. Her gimmick is darkness and her style is strong- she has one of the scariest spinebusters working today -and she’s always entertaining in the ring. She also seems poised for a breakout soon.
Her match at Women of Honor was an early tournament highlight, and she’s been gaining more and more career momentum. I would love to see what a creepy, brutal wrestler like Holidead would bring to the squeaky-clean atmosphere of the Mae Young Classic. It would be something weird, and something new- both things the Mae Young Classic is in desperate need of this year.

KRIS WOLF
This one is a no-brainer, but seriously, WWE: don’t sleep on Kris Wolf. Born in America but made in your mom, Kris brings an incredible mix of personality and in-ring skills to any promotion she wrestles for.
While she got her start in Stardom, she’s made a huge impact at Pro Wrestling EVE, SHIMMER, and dozens of other indie promotions. I have seen her wrestle in tag teams, I’ve seen her in singles matches, I’ve seen her on a ladder- she can do it all. I have never seen a bad Kris Wolf match.
She’s also a free agent right now, so there’s no reason not to book her. Honestly, if she doesn’t show up in the Mae Young Classic, someone messed up. Don’t mess up, WWE. Kris needs her meat.
COMMENTARY BONUS: DANN READ AND BETH PHOENIX
Please, WWE: hire some commentators this year that are familiar with the world of independent women’s wrestling. The Mae Young Classic commentary last year was borderline painful. Do better this time.
If you must have a dude at the commentary table, I am calling out Dann Read from Pro Wrestling EVE as the man for the job. Read is a regular commentator for EVE matches, and his knowledge of women’s wrestling as well as his passion for it makes EVE matches fun, informative, and accessible to new viewers.
That’s the kind of commentary an event like Mae Young Classic 2018 needs to draw in viewers and keep them watching.
Obviously, the WWE side of things needs to be represented too. I think Beth Phoenix would be an awesome partner for Read in this endeavor. Phoenix did a great job on the WWE Mixed Match Challenge commentary this year, and she’d be able to offer some perspective on the unique challenges and pressures these wrestlers would encounter in WWE.
