ROH and NJPW to Hold G1 Supercard at Madison Square Garden
ROH has announced that they will be holding a joint show with NJPW on April 6th, 2019 in Madison Square Garden.
On June 12, 2018, Sinclair Broadcasting’s CEO, Chris Ripley dropped the news to the Baltimore Business Journal that ROH would be running a show at New York’s famous Madison Square. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that it would be the first show since the 1960s that when someone other than WWE ran the Garden:
"If this show does happen, it would be the first time since the early 60s when someone other than Vince McMahon or his father would have promoted a pro wrestling event in the world’s most famous arena. – Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter"
Upon this announcement, according to PWInsider, WWE communicated with Madison Square Garden and any upcoming dates for ROH were pulled. While no specific date was given at the time, it was assumed that it would be WrestleMania weekend. PWInsider also had a statement from Ring of Honor COO Joe Koff, who indicated that they had a date, that WWE communicated with MSG, and then the date was pulled. Koff indicated that their lawyers would be in communication with all parties involved.
Evidently, the issue has been resolved. In a statement released on ROHwrestling.com, Ring of Honor announced the show. On April 6th, 2019, Ring of Honor will be joining forces with New Japan Pro Wrestling to hold the G1 Supercard. The show will feature the likes of Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi, and Tetsuya Naito, along with top ROH stars. Titles from both companies will be defended, meaning that this will be a major show for both companies.
