WWE will air the second Mae Young Classic starting on Sept. 5 at 9 p.m. ET, and we want to get you excited for the tournament by profiling the women competing. Get ready to learn more about Isla Dawn.

During the Parade of Champions for the second Mae Young Classic, Beth Phoenix introduced Isla Dawn with the influences of “feminism and witchcraft.” I saw my Twitter feed explode with heart eyes and excitement over her without even seeing a match from her. For me though, it was a moment of complete pride of seeing one of my indie favorites from 2017 make it to this stage.

Trained by Killian Dain, Dawn first made her mark in Scottish wrestling under the name “Courtney Stewart,” making appearances in ICW and Pro Wrestling EVE amongst others. However, in late 2016, like the Goddess reborn, she began wrestling as Isla Dawn as she split her time between the UK and the US.

Dawn worked for various promotions such as Combat Zone Wrestling, Women Superstars Uncensored, Shine, and Nova Pro while she was residing in the states and even made an appearance on Monday Night Raw when she had returned to the UK for the Winter. However, I came to know her while she competed in my own backyard fed Atlanta Wrestling Entertainment.

Admittedly, when she made her debut at AWE Homegrown in a mixed tag match with Billy Brash against Ethan Case and Impact Knockout Su Young, a few people in the crowd made Sailor Moon jokes because of her black gear adorned with a gold crescent moon.

By the end of the match though, she had made a hell of a first impression with her hard hitting style and clever submissions. Throughout the summer, she returned, having matches against Kamilla Kaine, Impact Knockout Kiera Hogan, fellow Mae Young Classic participant Priscilla Kelly, and Lucha Underground’s Ivelisse.

In fact, that last match was declared the best match in AWE in 2017 and was so good that people were throwing money in the ring by the end of it. I should know, I was there at ringside. Her final match in AWE was against Tenille Dashwood and was voted to by the fans to be the main event over the Georgia Wrestling Crown championship match.

Since that night back in March against Dashwood, Dawn’s star has been on the rise as she started working for Progress and signed with NXT’s new UK division. If her Twitter posts have been any indication, she has set her eyes on the soon to be introduced NXT UK Women’s Championship. Hopefully, the Mae Young Classic will show all of those interested in her feminism and witchcraft just how special she is.
