Pentagon Jr. and Sami Callihan ready to go to war in Mexican Death Match
By Scott Howard
After an epic bout at Slammiversary back on July 22, Pentagon Jr. and Sami Callihan are ready to go war once again.
Pentagon Jr. and Sami Callihan are slated to face each other again tonight on Impact (Aug. 23) in a Mexican Death Match that was taped earlier this month at Rebel Nightclub in Toronto.
From the accounts of many fans in attendance (myself included), the match is must-see viewing – a symphony of destruction every bit as barbaric as their previous encounter.
It also begins to set the stage for what could be the most interesting match at Bound for Glory in New York City on Oct. 14.
As featured performer on Lucha Underground as well Impact, Pentagon has cemented his status as one of the hottest talents outside of the WWE – which, according to completely unsurprising rumors, has recently expressed an interest in signing both him and his brother Rey Fenix.
Both have been booked into pivotal matches at ALL IN on Sept. 1 – Pentagon is slated to face Kenny Omega, while Fenix will join Rey Mysterio and Bandido to take on the team of the Young Bucks and Chris Jericho.
Without question, Callihan has established himself as one of the most hated characters in all of professional wrestling in recent months.
Callihan was vilified by many traditionalists for the injury suffered by Eddie Edwards (taped in January and broadcast in March) and fully embraced every bit of vitriol and hatred thrown his way.
While Gargano/Ciampa may have drawn more attention in NXT, it borrowed more than a few story beats from the blood-feud that played out between Callihan and Edwards.
After dropping the last match (for the time being) of that storyline, ‘The Draw’ and his Ohio versus Everything (or OvE) brethren immediately launched themselves into a feud with Pentagon and Fenix. That led to the brutal Mask vs Hair match against Pentagon at Slammiversary, which many considered the match of the night and some consider to be among the top Impact matches of all time.
Though Callihan is sporting a sleeker new look after losing that match and getting his head shaved, this feud is far from over.
And that’s good news for Impact Wrestling fans heading into Bound for Glory.
