2. The Hardyz Return at WrestleMania 33

A pop so loud that people in neighbouring states must have heard it. Hell, people across the ocean must have heard it. The long-overdue return of the Hardy Boyz to WWE was the highlight of WrestleMania 33, and both Matt and Jeff were given a true heroes’ welcome.

The sheer spectacle of a reported 70,000 people losing their minds is one that sticks in the memory, even as I recall losing my own mind in the early hours of a UK morning (sorry, neighbours).

WWE really rolled out the red carpet for their returning prodigal sons. As a last-minute addition to the Raw Tag Team Championship ladder match, there could be no more fitting showcase for the Hardyz as they proceeded to remind the crowd just how well they know their way around ladders.

If there’d been any worry as to whether Team Xtreme had lost their edge in the intervening years, a Swanton bomb off a ladder (and into another ladder, upon which lay an incredibly brave Sheamus and Cesaro) swiftly put paid to those doubts.

Matt and Jeff left WrestleMania holding tag team gold, as they had so many times before. While their careers would eventually diverge once again, it was undeniably thrilling to see them return as a team. Perhaps the greatest legacy Matt leaves behind him is the work he did as one half of Team Xtreme, revolutionizing WWE’s tag team division.
