Daily She-DT: Naomi and Asuka are too good, EVE’s Strong Women Style

facebooktwitterreddit

Today’s Daily She-DT examines the Naomi and Asuka tag team on SmackDown Live, Pro Wrestling EVE’s upcoming show, and Liv Morgan’s injury.

Naomi and Asuka formed a partnership on SmackDown Live weeks ago, as Naomi needed someone to have her back in order to even the odds against the IIconics. After defeating Billie Kay last week, Asuka has more than evened the score.

These two have formed one of WWE’s most dynamic tag teams, because the way they play off of each other in backstage segments is exceptional. I loved watching Asuka intimidate Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose when they tried to touch Naomi’s hair, and I love how the two just keep sticking up for each other. They picked up a victory over Deville and Rose on SmackDown, sharing the purest of hugs after the match.

If the women of WWE have to spend so much time in tag matches, the partnership between each wrestler should mean something. The IIconics and Absolution have both been entrenched, but Naomi and Asuka are quickly becoming even more entertaining. Asuka punching Naomi’s hands during warm-ups so hard that Naomi has to stop her? Brilliant. The in-ring work? Even better.

WWE’s rumored Women’s Tag Team Championships may be forthcoming, and I’d considered these two sleepers to beat the likes of Sasha and Bayley or the Riott Squad.

Shaul Guerrero To Be Ring Announcer For Women Of Wrestling

On October 10th and 11th, WOW will have tapings in Los Angeles, and these shows will be a huge deal for women’s wrestling. Not only will Holidead make her return to WOW, but Tessa Blanchard, Impact Wrestling’s Knockouts Champion, will make her WOW debut.

On top of that, Shaul Guerrero has been announced as the ring announcer, replacing WOW founder David McLane in that role. Guerrero is a former FCW Champion, and she once famously drew “L’s” on the foreheads of other competitors while in WWE’s system.

WOW’s tapings on October 10th and 11th will eventually be broadcast on AXS TV, so this is a big opportunity for Guerrero to make a name for herself in wrestling as a ring announcer. In the future, it’d be interesting for her to assume a commentator role for WOW, since she has experience working on commentary.

Liv Morgan Suffers Concussion

A WWE representative confirmed to Fightful.com’s Sean Ross Sapp that Liv Morgan suffered a concussion on Monday Night Raw. SRS did an amazing job of reporting all the details regarding the heavily-discussed incident, so I’d recommend clicking the link and thoroughly reading the report. Simply paraphrasing his words would potentially cause some of the meaning to be lost in translation.

Concussions are impossible to predict, so hopefully Morgan’s symptoms clear sooner rather than later. It was an unfortunate incident that resulted from Brie Bella’s “YES!” kicks, and there’s been plenty of debate surrounding what happened.

Plenty of wrestlers have weighed in, from Bully Ray to Jessicka Havok.

At the end of the day, the focus is on how WWE handles Morgan’s current injury and future head injuries, as Morgan wasn’t able to immediately come out of the match and took a triple suplex bump shortly after being concussed.

Pro Wrestling EVE’s Strong Women Style

Pro Wrestling EVE put on two of the best shows of 2018 in Wrestle Queendom and SHEVOLUTION, with Meiko Satomura vs. Kay Lee Ray at Wrestle Queendom standing today as one of the top ten matches I’ve watched this year.

Naturally, I have high expectations for this weekend’s “Strong Women Style” shows.

Yes, plural, “shows”, because “Show Two” has already been sold out on September 29th.

Show One includes Sendai Girls World Champion Chihiro Hashimoto vs. Jazzy Gabbert, Laura Di Matteo vs. Kay Lee Ray, a pair of SHE-1 qualifiers, and an amazing Four-Way match for the Pro-Wrestling: EVE Championship.

Show Two? Hashimoto vs. Jordynne Grace and a sick KLR vs. Toni Storm vs. Killer Kelly vs. Charlie Morgan Four-Way match!

You can purchase the show on FITE TV here for $9.99. Reminder: It starts at 10:30 a.m. ET on Saturday, September 29th.

ROH’s Death Before Dishonor

On Friday, Ring of Honor will air its “Death Before Dishonor” Pay Per View from Las Vegas, and while there’s only one women’s match on the card, it’s a big one. Sumie Sakai will defend the Women of Honor Championship against Tenille Dashwood, who is out for revenge after losing to Sakai in the semifinals of the WOH Tournament at Supercard of Honor. Sakai would go on to become the first WOH Champion by defeating Kelly Klein in the finals.

Since that victory, Sakai has defeated Stella Grey, Jenny Rose, Chardonnay, Hazuki, Karen Q, and Madison Rayne in successful title defenses.

Despite being arguably the biggest star in WOH (the newly-signed Rayne may have something to say about that, though), Dashwood has yet to sniff an opportunity since being upset by Sakai in the tournament. Could this be her time to shine and end Sakai’s reign at the top of the division? Even with Jay Lethal vs. Will Ospreay on the card, I am honestly far more intrigued by this match between Sakai and Dashwood.

Big Names Announced For WWR Show

Jazz and Jazzy Gabert have been announced for Women’s Wrestling Revolution’s AMAZING Pay Per View in Long Island on October 28th. Since they haven’t finalized the ticket prices for the show that goes head-to-head with WWE’s Evolution, they asked fans on Twitter how much they think the show is worth. Judging by the card, I’d say, a whole lot! I mean, Jazz, Jazzy Gabert, Tenille Dashwood, and Jordynne Grace on the same card? That’s wild!

Lana Is The Best, Lana No. 1

Becky Lynch’s match with Lana on SmackDown Live was pretty solid. Lost in all the Aiden English/Rusev/Lana drama is the fact that Lana continues to look good in the ring, building on her breakout performance at Money in the Bank. We should all give a tip of the cap to her!

The hard work behind-the-scenes has turned into a quality finished product inside the ring, and Lana is such a valuable part of SmackDown Live because of her acting and wrestling. It’s always good to see another breakout star in WWE’s Women’s Division, as there have been so many success stories over the past two years.

Quick Hits

  • Becky Lynch’s SmackDown Women’s Championship victory over Charlotte Flair at Hell in a Cell is a moment that many fans will relish for years to come, because it marked a long climb to the top for Lynch, who bested her best friend for the thing that means more to her than anything else. It told the next chapter in an incredible story, and there’s now a sweet plaque with a part of the ring canvas being sold on WWE Shop on right now. It’s $64.99, and it’s expected to be in stock on October 12th.
  • SHIMMER Wrestling just keeps trudging forward with big moves, as they announced that they will be in New York City over WrestleMania week (April 4-6 before WM on April 7th in MetLife Stadium) for the 2019 WWN Live Experience. SHIMMER will be there with EVOLVE, wXw, and other notable  promotions. This is a great way for SHIMMER to get more eyeballs on their product, and I’d put them right there with the good company they’ll be in.
  • Carmella was interviewed by TVInsider.com’s Scott Fishman, and the former SmackDown Women’s Championship gave some more insightful responses [H/T: WrestlingInc.com’s Joshua Gagnon]. She spoke about her awesome laugh and the fact that she’s willing to make fun of herself. That’s helped make her one of those big success stories that I mentioned in the section on Lana. Mella added that she feels she’s exceeded expectations, and it’s always awesome to see that happen.
  • Taya Valkyrie will be at “Ladies Night Out 4” on November 17th, which streams live on TitleMatchNetwork.com. This will be Taya’s debut. Another former Knockouts Champion, Su Yung, is also scheduled to be on the card.
