Kenny Omega vs. Buddy Murphy Would Be The Dreamiest Of Matches

IWGP Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega has been one of the most decorated wresters in the world over the past two years, whereas Buddy Murphy, WWE’s current Cruiserweight Champion, only started to gain widespread praise this year.

Buddy Murphy has a huge test coming up, as he must defend his WWE Cruiserweight Championship against Mustafa Ali at Survivor Series. Ali is Murphy’s long-time rival and someone who has gone to war with Murphy in some of 205 Live’s most acclaimed matches, including a victory over “The Juggernaut” in a No Disqualification match.

Meanwhile, Kenny Omega has an even bigger bout planned further down the road, as he is currently poised to face NJPW’s “Ace” Hiroshi Tanahashi in the main event of Wrestle Kingdom 13. Omega finally defeated Kazuchika Okada at Dominion to become the IWGP Heavyweight Champion, and like Murphy, he’ll do anything to continue to prove that he’s the best.

There’s no doubt that Omega and Murphy are both fantastic performers, so could you imagine them going head-to-head in a match? The two teased a possible confrontation between them down-the-road with a couple of friendly tweets.

Murphy and Omega aren’t just two extraordinary athletes who are capable of producing some breath-takingly explosive and powerful moves in the ring, but they’re also artists inside the squared circle. I’d wager that Murphy is one of the best in WWE at adjusting to different wrestling styles, as evidenced by his great matches with Kalisto, Mark Andrews, Cedric Alexander, and Mustafa Ali, all of which occurred in different contexts.

Creativity is what makes professional wrestling so special in this day and age, and Omega and Murphy always find ways to up the ante. Omega’s three best singles matches this year were against Chris Jericho, Pentagon Jr., and Okada. Those are three wrestlers of completely different sizes, backgrounds, and athletic strengths. Each match required a different story from an emotional perspective, too, and Omega, for as much criticism as he’s received as IWGP Heavyweight Champion from some fans, is one of wrestling’s best story-tellers.

While Omega is with NJPW for the forseeable future and Murphy is locked in as one of WWE’s most valuable WWE Network-exclusive talents, the fact that we can at least ponder this match happening at some point in the distant future is yet another testament of how awesome pro wrestling is right now. It’s funny, too, how Murphy cut weight and is theoretically not at full strength, yet his performances have been on another level. (His 205 Live non-title match with Andrews being a recent example.)
