NXT’s Roderick Strong to Wrestle for Evolve Wrestling Championship
It’s been an interesting couple months for Evolve Wrestling. In light of it’s partnership with the WWE, Evolve has become something of a showcase for the more overlooked and underutilized Superstars among the NXT roster.
This changing of the guard really kicked off at Evolve 114. Early in the night, The Street Profits defeated Chris Dickinson and Jaka to win the Evolve Tag Team Championship. Later in the night, even more shockingly, Fabian Aichner would dethrone Shane Strickland of his Evolve Championship. Aichner has since successfully defended his title at Evolve 115 against Kassius Ohno, but these next couple Evolve shows will prove to be the Italian rookie’s biggest challenge to date.
Following an interesting Twitter exchange between the Evolve Champion and 1/4 of the NXT Tag Team Champions, Fabian Aichner will be defending his title in a Triple Threat match against Roderick Strong and former WWN Champion Austin Theory. The match will take place at Evolve 117 on December 15th, but that isn’t the only show that the Undisputed star has been added to.
The next day, December 16th at Evolve 118, Strong will have a one-on-one match against Evolve’s resident daredevil, Darby Allin. Also at Evolve 118, if Fabian Aichner manages to retain his title against Theory and Strong the night before, then he will defend the Evolve Championship again. This time in a one-on-one match against the first man to ever win the Evolve Championship, AR Fox.
These upcoming Evolve shows will mark Strong’s first appearance in Evolve since Evolve 64 over two years ago, where he was defeated by Matt Riddle. When Strong last wrestled under the WWN banner, he had the distinction of winning the FIP World Heavyweight Championship more times than anyone else with three reigns. He’s also a two-time FIP World Tag Team Champion – respectively – with Erick Stevens and Rich Swann.
Though he often wrestled for the title, the Evolve Championship eluded Strong for his entire career. Could he Shock the System at Evolve 117 and bring more gold to The Undisputed Era? Find out on December 15th. Tickets to Evolve 117 can be purchased here, while Evolve 118 tickets can be found here.
All Evolve shows can be viewed on the Club WWN streaming service for $9.99.
