AEW: Penelope Ford, Joey Janela, MJF Have All Signed
One of the first surprise names we saw during the AEW Double or Nothing Rally was the appearance of MJF, but little did we know that two more participants were going to be there, too.
MJF made his way onto the stage at cut a promo about why he was the best. He then took his gum and stuck it to Conrad Thompson’s forehead before continuing to tell the people in attendance why he was the best, and why AEW needed him. As he was speaking, MJF got destroyed with a shot from a crutch, and to everyone’s surprise, Joey Janela was holding that crutch.
Janela then confirmed that he was All Elite along with Penelope Ford, who is a very significant signing. Britt Baker was the first women’s wrestler announced as signing to AEW, and Penelope Ford, an exceptional wrestler and manager, was the second. With Brandi Rhodes’s announcement that the women would be receiving equal pay, the signing of Ford is an indication that they are putting their money where their mouth is.
Janela is one of the most in demand talents from the indies, where he has been known to put on creative shows like Joey Janela’s Spring Break, and Lost in New York, all while innovating in the ring. While Janela is out with an injury at the moment, the announcement of his signing is another big step forward for AEW in their early days.
Finally, MJF, otherwise known as Maxwell Jacob Friedman, is another up and coming talent on the independent scene in wrestling. MJF has been known for his old school heel persona, where he is a young man with rich parents that help him afford all the finer things in life. MJF has attracted eyes for his time in MLW, and one has to wonder if MLW will still be on his schedule going forward since he has signed with AEW.
These three signings show that AEW is out there to get stars, and will pay them well in order to do so. This is good news for wrestlers that are looking for places to work, and AEW is already starting to set a new standard in terms of pay scale and equal pay for female and male wrestlers. The next few weeks are going to be very interesting, to say the least.
