WWE: The Case For Brock Lesnar Winning At Royal Rumble
By Brett Grega
Brock Lesnar may oftentimes be an absentee Universal Champion, but is there a case for him keeping his title at Royal Rumble 2019?
When wrestling fans bring up Brock Lesnar, his name is usually spoken with a tone of despair. That’s because his Universal Championship reign is thought of by many as a lame duck run with the belt.
A run that has nonetheless severely damaged WWE’s flagship show for far too long now, due to Raw having it’s main champion largely unwilling to devote the time to appear on weekly TV.
Those complaints directed at Brock Lesnar’s championship reign are largely valid. I don’t think anyone could make a reasonable case for why the person who holds the top belt in WWE shouldn’t show up on weekly TV for months at a time.
However, when Brock Lesnar does decide to come into work, he doesn’t create segments or matches that are indicative of a champion who’s phoning it in. He rarely, if ever, comes across as that lame duck champion who needs the title taken from him as soon as possible.
In fact, Lesnar has actually created some of the most compelling segments and matches in WWE over the course of his time as Universal Champion.
His matches against Daniel Bryan and A.J. Styles at the last two Survivor Series pay-per-views were critically acclaimed. His segments with Samoa Joe were some of the most entertaining angles on Raw at the time. His long-time rivalry with Roman Reigns was one of the most consistently talked about feuds in WWE.
Sure, Lesnar’s moveset is limited, and he’s typically not one for cutting his own promos. None of that really factors into play however, when you considering just how plain entertaining all of those matches and segments have been.
Lesnar rarely ever, unless in the purposeful context of his feud with Roman Reigns, comes across as a champion simply showing up to cash a check or fulfill a contract. It may be hard to believe, but Brock Lesnar puts in great work when the time calls for it.

Typically, that magical time when Lesnar does his best work happens to be when WWE is building towards its major shows. It’s the time when you’re most likely to see the Universal Champion on weekly TV to build towards a major main event match.
Well, if Raw was any indication, now you can see Lesnar on weekly WWE TV, and it just so happens his time is now. We’re rapidly heading towards some of WWE’s biggest and most high-profile shows of the year, events where ‘The Beast Incarnate’ usually thrives.
Most simply put, that’s why Brock Lesnar should win at Royal Rumble.
We’re not on the road to yet another months long absence where Lesnar is harder to find then Carmen Sandiego. Instead, we’re on the road to WrestleMania, where Brock Lesnar will be on Raw far more frequently to set-up exciting segments and rivalries.
While Braun Strowman is arguably deserving of an Universal Championship reign at some point, now is simply not his time. Even with any doubts about Strowman’s promo abilities or in-ring work aside, he’s lost to Lesnar far too many times to suddenly pull out a win at Royal Rumble.
There’s no reason to discard the entire history of their feud to have Lesnar drop the belt, when its fairly safe to say Lesnar will be on Raw a lot more often heading into WrestleMania in order to likely create some highly memorable and entertaining moments on the show.
It may be hard to fathom, but there might just be a case that Brock Lesnar is the best person to leave Royal Rumble as Universal Champion.
