This year’s WWE Royal Rumble comes to us on January 27, and the Road to WrestleMania is heating up more than ever. Many fans want Becky Lynch to be a surprise entrant and winner of the Women’s Rumble, but could Ronda Rousey shock the world by doing that and challenging Lynch at WrestleMania 35?

With the Royal Rumble just a week away, there’s no shortage of people expecting Becky Lynch to shock the world as a surprise entrant to win the Women’s Royal Rumble. There is, however, a possibility that seems to be flying under the radar that turns this very concept on its head. Ronda Rousey herself could be the one to become a surprise entrant and go the distance.

The primary reason that fans want Becky Lynch to win the Rumble is so that she can challenge Ronda Rousey for the Raw Women’s Championship. When Becky Lynch’s popularity began to rise just before last year’s Survivor Series, she quickly became one of the most compelling characters in all of WWE.

With Lynch as SmackDown Women’s Champion, it looked like we were set to get a truly spectacular first-time clash at Survivor Series between her and Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey. Unfortunately, things didn’t go according to plan.

On an episode of Monday Night Raw before Survivor Series, Becky Lynch led the women of SmackDown Live in an invasion to attack Raw’s female superstars to send a message before the brands clashed at Survivor Series. During an in-ring brawl, Becky caught a stray punch from Nia Jax that gave her some serious damage and a concussion.

The moment itself only increased the ways that fans were clamoring for Lynch, who continued to bring the fight to Raw despite her face being covered in blood and the obvious injuries she sustained. By the next night on SmackDown Live, Becky may have been the most over act in all of WWE. Unfortunately, she wasn’t medically cleared to compete.

With the injury at the hands of Jax keeping her temporarily on the shelf, Becky was forced to pick a replacement for Survivor Series. Lynch reluctantly chose former friend turned rival Charlotte Flair to represent SmackDown against Rousey. Flair took the fight to Rousey, but ultimately lost via disqualification after unloading on Rousey with a kendo stick.

As fun as the match between Rousey and Flair had been, fans were still itching to see “The Man” Becky Lynch square off with the self-proclaimed “Baddest Woman on the Planet.” That desire only skyrocketed when Rousey chose to interfere in Lynch’s title defense at TLC.

Rousey appeared and screwed both Lynch and Flair by sending them careening off a ladder, helping current SmackDown Women’s Champion Asuka capture the title for the first time. With all of that in mind, fans have been clamoring to see the culmination of Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey’s simmering rivalry at WrestleMania 35.

With Lynch no longer holding the SmackDown Women’s Championship, this has led to speculation that she’ll come up short against Asuka at the Royal Rumble only to enter the Women’s Rumble as a surprise and go the distance. With a victory, she would have the chance to challenge the Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey.

It’s a great possibility, and Becky’s rise in popularity makes her a logical choice to pull off such a feat in only the second-ever Women’s Royal Rumble. However, it’s not the only way for us to get this collision at WrestleMania. There’s actually a different path that would be more surprising, more intriguing, and lay more groundwork for a deeper rivalry here.

One of the underlying themes of Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey’s budding rivalry is the tensions between NXT’s Four Horsewomen and MMA’s Four Horsewomen. Lynch and Flair were both members of the NXT foursome, while Rousey was part of the MMA’s counterpart group.

More from Royal Rumble

Don’t forget that Sasha Banks, the woman challenging Ronda Rousey for the Raw Women’s Championship at the Royal Rumble, is also a member of the NXT Four Horsewomen. With Becky Lynch having lost her title because of Rousey’s interference, we could see Lynch pay back the favor by helping Banks dethrone Rousey as the Raw Women’s Champion.

If Becky managed to also recapture her title from Asuka, the stage would be set for Ronda Rousey to turn the tables on the expected outcome. Without the championship, Rousey could insert herself into the Women’s Rumble, go the distance, and challenge Becky Lynch at WrestleMania 35.

WWE could lean towards doing this just because of a desire to be unpredictable, but another factor at play as SmackDown’s eventual move to Fox Sports in October of 2019. With Rousey’s mainstream name recognition, WWE could decide they’d prefer her be a staple of SmackDown before the brand makes the move to Fox Sports.

Regardless of the reasoning, charting this path to Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey’s potential WrestleMania collision could shift the narrative while still putting us on the road to a dream match between these two. It would also add yet another layer to the potential Four Horsewomen vs Four Horsewomen match WWE is slowly building towards.
