According to a recent report by The Hollywood Reporter, a Hulk Hogan biopic is in the works for Netflix with Chris Hemsworth in the starring role.

He’s perhaps best known for his role as the Norse superhero Thor, but now Chris Hemsworth will reportedly be channeling his inner “Suburban Commando” to play Hulk Hogan in an upcoming Netflix biopic.

According to Borys Kit for The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming production directed by Todd Phillips and written by Scott Silver, the team behind the upcoming film “The Joker”, will focus on Hogan’s development and rise as a worldwide superstar and wrestler featuring Hemsworth in the starring role.

The biopic, which is also being produced by the likes of Bradley Cooper and Eric Bischoff among others, will veer away from any of the recent controversies surrounding Hogan, instead choosing to focus solely on the, “origin story of the Hulkster and Hulkamania.”

Initially, this sounds like an incredibly intriguing project. The story of how Hulk Hogan became a star known around the world could very well make for an interesting film. Like him or not, Hogan is one of the biggest personalities to ever step into a ring. He also remains one of the most immediately recognizable stars in the world of wrestling.

With that in mind, considering the amount of talent already attached to this production, there’s certainly potential for this biopic to be a great success.

On the other hand however, Hogan’s recent controversies relating to the Gawker scandal and his usage of racist and offensive language are now forever linked to his career. Those controversies will undoubtedly cast a shadow on any hopes this production might have of turning this film into a true “feel good” story in the vein of the recently released “Fighting With My Family”.

With Hogan reportedly, “acting as a consultant on the movie as well as executive producer,” it seems unlikely those controversies will be addressed in the slightest.

At the best, that means this movie will likely feel like an unfinished story. A potentially entertaining and engaging story nonetheless, but one which we all know has a significantly less satisfactory ending than will likely be presented even considering the proposed scope of the story.

Arguably, it would be in the best interest of the production to address these controversies, or for Hogan himself to issue a more widely accepted apology for his inflammatory behavior before the film’s release, in order to promote a wider acceptance of the biopic.

Currently, it would likely be fair to say there are many fans who would take umbrage with a movie focusing on the bright spots of Hogan’s career without properly addressing those scandals, however members of the production may have quite some time to figure out how to handle that concern.

Mike Johnson of PWInsider recently reported that, “they are very early on in the process of the film.” Johnson emphasizes the reported lack of work done on the screenplay thus far as evidence, while also noting that Hemsworth is currently the only star attached to the film.

Regardless, this biopic will surely be a source of great intrigue, debate, and potential excitement for wrestling fans over the entirety of it’s production, no matter how long that may take.
