AEW: Everything you need to know about Angelico
One of AEW’s latest signings is Angelico. He’s a familiar face for Lucha Underground fans, but for those who don’t know him, here’s what you need to know.
Born in South Africa, Angelico began his wrestling career there in Pro Wrestling Alliance; the previous incarnation of a company owned by Booker T now known as Reality of Wrestling. Even in his early days just starting out, the South African had a knack for high flying, acrobatic offense. It’s what eventually got him the nickname of The Blond Superman. Angelico quickly started to catch steam in his debut year, but that same year, PWA folded.
The young lad from Johannesburg moved on and migrated to multiple places across the independent wrestling scene. He finally hit his stride in the early 2010s when he joined Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide. His time there would eventually set the stage for his rise as a global commodity.
It was in AAA that Angelico got acquainted with Jack Evans. They would become a tag team and win the AAA World Tag Team Titles not once, not twice, but a nearly unprecedented three times. Only one other tag team – La Secta – has won the titles as many times and both teams are tied for the most reigns in the title’s history. Not only do Evans and Angelico continue to tag together to this day, Angelico revealed on Twitter – as we speak – that his partner signed a deal with AEW, too, so expect to see more of them together in AEW’s future.
In singles competition, the luchador is just as impressive on his own. Not only does he continue to dazzle and reach unprecedented heights – literally – in one-on-one action, but he’s managed to grab some singles gold along the way. Most notably, he won the Shotgun Championship in wXw. He has also dedicated time to working for other popular promotions like WCPW and PWG. Of course, Angelico would find his greatest bits of success while working for Lucha Underground.
In Lucha Underground, Angelico was practically a human highlight reel. If he wasn’t flipping off the top rope, he was diving off of balconies and into the ring. Like so:
He did that more than once, by the way. How Angelico manages to remain in one piece after dives like that is beyond me. In his case, however, the high risks result in high rewards as dives like this helped the 32-year old capture Lucha Underground’s inaugural Trios Titles alongside Ivelisse and Son of Havoc. Now that he’s gone from Lucha Underground, he can turn out to be quite the asset for All Elite Wrestling.
Whether he works as a singles star or a tag team specialist, Angelico is bound to deliver some jaw dropping offense – perhaps at some death defying leaps – for AEW. If you love high octane, pulse pounding action, then you are going to love Angelico. He is going to make AEW TV very interesting.
