Who is next in-line to hold the prestigious US Title on Raw (or SmackDown)?

It has been announced that on the June 3 edition of Monday Night Raw, Rey Mysterio will be forced to vacate the US Title due to an injury suffered at the hands of former champ Samoa Joe.

Mysterio took the title from Joe at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view on May 19. Mysterio quickly pinned Joe in controversial fashion, as Joe’s shoulders were clearly off the mat.

After the squash, Mysterio’s celebration was cut short by Joe viciously beating him around the ring. WWE announced that the new champion suffered a separated shoulder that will keep him out of action for the foreseeable future.

With the Super ShowDown, Stomping Grounds and Extreme Rules pay-per-views set to take place in a six-week time span, WWE needs to get the title picture sorted out in short order.

There are a few ways WWE can go about crowning a new champion.

  • They can name Samoa Joe champion because he wasn’t actually pinned (I hate this so much that I actually think they might do it).
  • They can place two Superstars in a match to name a new champion (Too easy, but the most likely scenario).
  • They can hold an eight-man tournament to culminate with a title match at Stomping Grounds (This is my favorite idea and one that makes the creative team’s job a lot easier. It’s hard to screw-up a tournament).

With this in mind, here are the five Superstars I believe should be serious threats to capture the vacant United States Championship.
