Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley will have a dream match for the ages at AEW All Out on Aug. 31 and the build to the match is already captivating.

Jon Moxley is arguably the hottest star in wrestling right now. Having won the IWGP United States Championship off of Juice Robinson, Moxley has entered NJPW’s G1 Climax this year and is poised for the performances of his life. But AEW’s All Out on Aug. 31 will be Moxley’s biggest stage to shine this summer, because he can make a statement by having an all-timer against Kenny Omega, who is capable of putting on some of the most memorable matches of this era.

Omega vs. Moxley seemed like an incomprehensible dream match at this time last year, but it’s all going down in Chicago at the end of August. All bets are off on predicting a winner, and fans are mostly focused on just how insane this match will be.

In an excellent interview with Chris Hayner for Gamespot, Omega gave effusive praise to his “All Out” opponent. But on the other side of the coin, he called this match a “real test” for the white-hot Moxley, asserting that the former Dean Ambrose must prove that he can be a “multifaceted tool” and “have the type of performances that AEW is going to command from him”.

As a WWE Superstar, Moxley was held in high regard by the fan base and was known for being a workhorse and great character guy despite WWE’s missteps. Omega alluded to these qualities and Moxley’s magnetic persona in the Gamespot interview.

But critics sometimes poked holes in the quality of Moxley’s matches and his consistency in big titles matches against opponents other than Seth Rollins (his wrestling soulmate). These are valid points and while Moxley should have turned aside those critics with his work against AJ Styles, it didn’t help that he was often compared to modern-day legends like Roman Reigns, Rollins and Styles in terms of in-ring performance.

Moxley’s strong match against Robinson is fresh in the minds of wrestling fans and he’ll have a chance to make a huge statement in a (likely) deathmatch with Joey Janela at AEW’s Fyter Fest. Yet, against Omega, the expectations will be on another level. Omega’s series of matches with Kazuchika Okada and Chris Jericho have pushed Omega into wrestling lore, so greatness will be almost the bare minimum for Moxley.

However, Moxley has been so good lately and seems to have hit another level of motivation with the freedom of being outside WWE. That means nobody should doubt Moxley’s ability to rise to the occasion. Given that Omega is questioning Moxley so openly in interviews, it’s safe to say he is also quietly, but firmly, confident that his match with Moxley will be truly special.
