Upon the news that AEW on TNT was going to debut on October 2nd, 2019 everyone was wondering what the first show was going to look like. Now, we have the first match announcement, and it is a good one.

AEW’s official Twitter announced that the first match to be on AEW on TNT (we are still waiting to find out what the show is going to be called, though it’s likely it will be Dynamite) will be Sammy Guevara vs. Cody.

The timing of the announcement was very good, as they needed to announce a good match before the tickets went on sale. While the draw of the show will largely consist of it being the first ever AEW television show, it helps to have a match or two on the card. I assume that we will be learning a lot more about how the show is shaping up the closer we get to AEW All Out.

If Sammy Guevara is entering a feud with Cody on the first episode of TV, I expect that it will be a good one. Sammy is an excellent up and coming talent and working with Cody will help him tremendously. In terms of providing valuable experience and being a bigger star to help him grow, Cody is a perfect match up for him.

Cody, in the last year or so, has finally found his working style. Instead of trying to work an athletic match like Omega and working a pace that doesn’t work for him, he has firmly started working in a more 80s storytelling style. Both styles can produce good matches, but Cody is far better at the second style. Cody has become a master of the art of storytelling in a match with building drama and subtle selling and psychology in his matches.

Sammy Guevara is a great high flyer with incredible athletic ability. Having noticeably put on more muscle the last few months, it’s clear that Sammy is trying to position himself as a major player in AEW. Working with Cody will help him greatly in this regard, and a win would be an even bigger deal.

However, Cody getting the win in a competitive match won’t harm Sammy either. Either way, I expect this to be a fun match that will highlight the strengths of both wrestlers, with Cody showing the world that he isn’t the WWE’s Cody Rhodes anymore and Sammy showing that he’s a bright young star that everyone should pay attention to. The first AEW on TNT will be a can’t miss show, and I am excited to see how these two perform.
