The big news concerning AEW’s first television show on TNT keeps rolling in, as SI.com’s Justin Barrasso broke the news that the first AEW World Women’s Champion would be crowned on October 2nd.

AEW’s women division has been the source of much discussion since its first stars were announced long before AEW’s first show, Double or Nothing. While the signing of Britt Baker, Allie, Kylie Rae, and Nyla Rose pointed to attempts for them to take the division seriously, the addition of stars like Bea Priestly, Riho, and Awesome Kong show a willingness to add the best talent from around the world as well.

In the early shows, personally, the highlight of the division has been Riho. She has stood out as exceptional in every one of her matches. Adding the likes of Aja Kong, and other Japanese women’s stars to the mix has helped make the division a strong one right out of the gate. The signing of Sadie Gibbs shows that they are preparing for the future, and looking to push these women as major stars going forward.

While we are not sure who will be competing for the title on October 2nd, Brandi Rhodes promised that who will be wrestling for the title will be revealed on the excellent Road to All Out show on YouTube. The last episode of the show featured a contract signing between Cody and Shawn Spears, so I fully expect some great stories to be developed heading into All Out.

As for who will be the first champion? I can see several stars in the mix. I think I see Riho as a future champion, but she will need to chase first. Britt Baker would be an excellent choice, as would Kylie Rae, if you want to launch a mega babyface from the get go.

As for heels, I could see Brandi being a choice, but I’m not sure that would work very well. Awesome Kong is a potential monster heel, but she has slowed down in the ring, so I’m not sure that is wise either. I could see Bea Priestly being a great top heel for the division, and even Britt Baker if they decide to turn her.

Regardless, the shape of the women’s division going forward is going to be very interesting. We will have a decent idea of what the company is going to look like going forward very soon, and I am excited for the next episode of Road to All Out.
