Hikaru Shida vs. Riho: The Winner Faces Nyla Rose for the AEW World Women’s Championship

Shida used her size advantage in the early part of this match, as Riho went for an armdrag, but Shida just powered out. Riho hit a dropkick after bridging out of a pinfall attempt. Shida hit a giant knee strike in the corner, dropping Riho. Shida hit a knee lift from ringside and went for a pinfall attempt, but Riho kicked out.

Shida locked on a big Boston crab on Riho, and it looked horrifying.
Riho managed to make it to the ropes. Shida put Riho on the turnbuckle and hit another knee before putting all her weight onto Riho for a pinfall attempt, but Riho kicked out. Riho hit a head scissors takedown on Shida and then pulled the ropes down to low bridge her and send her to the floor. Riho went to the top rope, but Shida cut her off.

Riho fought out of the suplex attempt and then hit a flying foot stomp off the top rope onto Shida, who was on the apron! Wow! Riho hit a giant flying crossbody, but Shida kicked out. Riho hit a drop toe hold that sent Shida into the middle rope. She went for a 619, but Shida caught her and locked on a stretch muffler. Riho rolled through into a pinfall attempt, but Shida kicked out. Riho hit the ropes and went into a wheelbarrow, sending Shida into the mat.

Riho hit another double stomp on Shida, but Shida got up and hit a flying knee on Riho! Riho tried to fight out of a brainbuster, but Shida just deadlifted her into a suplex and then hit a kick to Riho’s face. Riho kicked out. Riho floated over a suplex into a pinfall attempt, but Shida kicked out and deadlifted Riho before putting her onto the apron and then hitting a deadlift superplex into the ring! Riho kicked out! Shida went for another PK, but Riho grabbed her leg and then hit a Northern Lights Suplex!

Riho went to the top rope and both women started to battle on the top rope! Riho swept the legs out from under Shida and then hit a flying stomp onto Shida who was planted on the middle rope! Riho hit a running meteora, but Shida kicked out! Riho went back onto the top rope and missed a stomp, but landed on her feet and hit a meteora to the back of Shida’s head.

Shida then hit a judo throw and a horrific backbreaker, but Riho just kicked out! Riho rolled up Shida and got a nearfall! They exchanged a series of pinfall attempts, but Riho did a leg scissors on Shida’s arm, spun around in midair, and then rolled Shida up for the pinfall! Holy cow!

Rating **** (4 stars)

The match didn’t have a ton of heat because both women are a bit of an unknown quantity in AEW, but Riho and Shida was able to get them into the nearfalls. This match makes perfect sense since Riho has a pinfall victory over Rose already.
