The Sept. 16 edition of WWE Raw not only saw the latest actions Bray Wyatt, but it also saw a massive Universal Championship match made for the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view where The Fiend will challenge Seth Rollins.

Last night’s post-Clash of Champions edition of Raw built on what took place just 24 hours earlier when Seth Rollins successfully defended his WWE Universal Championship against Braun Strowman, only to be attacked by The Fiend after the match when he thought his night was over.

Rollins addressed those actions to open up last night’s show and said that at Hell in a Cell, he will defend the Universal Championship against Bray Wyatt inside of Hell in a Cell.  The rumored match officially became a reality, but the reality that Wyatt lives in is far different than that of which the normal person lives.

The Firefly Funhouse made an appearance while Rollins was mid-sentence and it set the stage for what’s to come.

Wyatt began his unorthodox talk-show persona and Rollins said he was a sick person.  However, Wyatt responded by saying everybody makes mistakes, even Rollins, but everyone eventually forgave him for his mistakes.  However, he said The Fiend doesn’t forget and he’s looking to add another “friend” to his collection that also includes the likes of Mick Foley, Kurt Angle, Jerry Lawler, and others.

The seed of doubt was planted in Rollins’ mind that The Fiend could show up and attack at any time, so when The Architect battled new Raw Tag Team Champion Robert Roode in the main event, it was easy to expect some type of appearance by The Fiend.  The match with Roode ended in a disqualification after Roode’s fellow tag team champion partner Dolph Ziggler got involved and began attacking Rollins.

It wouldn’t end there, however, and The O.C. intervened and quickly turned the attack into five-on-one.  But just in the nick of time, Kane made a surprise appearance to help Rollins just hours after winning the 24/7 Championship via his real-life persona as the mayor of Knox County, Tennessee.  Kane fended off the attackers, but he wouldn’t even be safe from The Fiend, who attacked Kane and took him out with a mandible claw.

More from Raw

The eerie image of The Fiend face-to-face with a beaten-down Rollins in the corner was how the show went off the air.  This was a big night for Wyatt, who appears to have a legitimate shot to win the Universal Championship at Hell in a Cell.  Not only does he have a real shot at winning that title for the first time, but it’s to the point where Wyatt must win the Universal Championship at Hell in a Cell.

For months, the Firefly Funhouse segments were consistently the most intriguing and entertaining moments on Raw week in and week out.  Wyatt was playing a character the likes of which the WWE hasn’t seen before and in an era where creativity is a thing of the past in a lot of ways, this was one of the most creative characters and gimmicks in a long time.  Fans were clamoring for more Wyatt and at SummerSlam, The Fiend made his in-ring debut.

He smashed Finn Balor and got an impressive win, but he hasn’t competed in a match since.  That will all change at Hell in a Cell when The Fiend competes inside Hell in a Cell.  Given the momentum that Wyatt has created over the past few months, this opportunity just makes sense.  It especially makes sense considering it’s inside of Hell in a Cell, a match that seems tailor-made for The Fiend.

You could make the argument that it’s too soon for Wyatt to win the Universal Championship considering it’s only his second match since adopting The Fiend gimmick, but given Wyatt’s past history, there is no other option but for him to win the title.  The old Wyatt consistently lost every big match and feud that was given to him and that made things harder for his character to ever truly reach a serious level.  Fans knew that ultimately, he just wouldn’t breakthrough.

That notion has to be dismissed here and he must make a statement early on.  Think about the creative plateaus that can be reached with this version of Wyatt as the Universal Champion.  Things would get as unpredictable as they’ve been in a while and seeing what he could do as the top champion on the red brand will be exciting.  And yes, the argument can be made that this might be a bit premature for him to win the title, but there really isn’t any other alternative.
