Don’t count out Rey Mysterio in his upcoming match against Seth Rollins for the WWE Universal Championship on Raw.

In an unusual twist, Rey Mysterio will have the chance to challenge Seth Rollins for the Universal Championship on what WWE is calling the “season premiere” of Monday Night Raw.

It’s one of the more unorthodox title matches I’ve seen in recent memory considering how close it is to the highly anticipated Hell in a Cell match between Bray Wyatt and Seth Rollins, yet it still presents WWE with a unique opportunity nonetheless.

It’s no secret that Rey Mysterio appears to be winding down his professional wrestling career. His retirement from WWE has seemed imminent on multiple occasions on TV, and some have viewed his last few matches as something of a final tour as a result.

When you have a superstar as iconic as Mysterio nearing retirement then, he deserves to go out with a bang. What better way then to shock the world by capturing the Universal Championship in what could end up being his final run?

Mysterio certainly has the chops in the ring still to justify such a win. His style is still incredibly entreating, perhaps illustrated best by his recent long series of acclaimed matches against Andrade.

The fact that he hasn’t had too many high-profile wins lately shouldn’t be much of a problem either. Someone with the record that Rey Mysterio has really doesn’t need much to validate a big win.

There honestly really isn’t all that much working against a potential Mysterio win in other words. The only thing standing in his way is the established feud between Wyatt and Rollins for the Universal Title.

The easy answer for what will happen come main event time on Raw is that Wyatt lets “The Fiend” lose on Mysterio after the match with Rollins reaches a crescendo. The show then closes with Wyatt continuting to haunt Rollins as he adds Mysterio to the list of legenday names that “The Fiend” has dispatched of.

It doesn’t have to be that way however. There’s really no reason why Wyatt’s mere presence, or just the hint of “The Fiend” making an appearance, couldn’t psych Rollins out leading to Mysterio capturing the surprise win.

At the very least, it’s most certainly not out of the realm of possibilities, meaning the only loose end left to tie up would be including Rey Mysterio in the Hell in a Cell match itself between the two top Raw stars upon his win.

Again, that really shouldn’t be an issue. Mysterio could hold his own in the match, and I can’t imagine his presence would muddle the story at play much.

That means the only downside for this whole surprise victory would be how quickly Mysterio would likely have to lose his title. I don’t see much in the way of justifying Wyatt taking a loss at Hell in a Cell, just considering how popular his character is and how much has been done to build him up.

In just his second match as “The Fiend”, Wyatt basically has to pick up the win here, meaning Mysterio’s win remains basically a feel-good moment that helps one of the company’s biggest stars exit the ring with one last major achievement to add to his hall of fame worthy resume.

To be frank, that all sounds good enough for me.

In other words, when you think about that title match between Seth Rollins and Rey Mysterio, don’t rule out an unexpected twist. It might just work out better than you would expect.
