AEW: Sammy Guevara is trending upward in All Elite Wrestling
The first ever AEW Dynamite on TNT shined a bright light on many names set to be a part of the emerging company’s immediate future. Among those names is Sammy Guevara who is trending towards becoming a key piece on AEW TV.
Guevara had the distinction of competing in the very first match in AEW television history, going up against Cody with the latter’s Full Gear title shot on the line. To audiences that may not have already been privy to Guevara’s in-ring promise, “The Best Ever” made a great first impression and helped deliver a thrilling opener that ended when a countered Shooting Star Press led to a roll-up loss for the up-and-comer.
After the match, Guevara offered a handshake to Cody which turned out to be a set up for Chris Jericho to jump the AEW EVP. Guevara’s assist to Jericho proved not to be an isolated incident as he appeared again later in the night, joining in on a post-main event beatdown of The Elite and seemingly aligned himself with Jericho, Santana, Ortiz and the debuting Jake Hager in the process.
It’s unclear whether or not the anti-Elite alliance is temporary or a long term threat to the fan-favorite group but regardless of their projected time together, the group covers many of the bases necessary to create a solid future for AEW.
Jericho is the slimy veteran kingpin as the champion, Hager is the new muscle to help keep the AEW Championship out of The Elite’s grasp, Santana and Ortiz are mercenaries bent on chaos and Guevara is the arrogant star-in-waiting. Guevara’s major role on AEW’s biggest night to date is a hugely positive indication of what his role appears to be in the group and what his trajectory is going to be in the company going forward.
Guevara is currently set to team with Jericho against Dustin Rhodes and Hangman Page on this week’s Dynamite. As it stands, neither Page nor Rhodes have scheduled matches for November’s Full Gear pay-per-view but Guevara’s newfound beef with Cody and Co. could land him on the card opposite either of his tag opponents for this week.
Guevara is currently winless in AEW singles matches thus far thanks to losses against Kip Sabian and most recently, Cody. With win-loss records already playing a big part in the company’s storylines, it would take a couple of big victories to put Guevara back in the AEW World title picture that he just recently missed the chance to skip to the front of the line. Those victories could start with a tag win on Dynamite and continue with another over a legend like Dustin Rhodes or Hangman Page who went into his All Out match against Chris Jericho a heavy favorite to become the first AEW World Champion.
Recent AEW shows have already pinpointed Sammy Guevara as someone to watch going forward but the months to come should be more than enough to solidify him as one of the centerpieces of All Elite’s future.
