AEW Dark: Results, Highlights, and Grades for October 29, 2019
AEW Dark features three matches tonight, with QT Marshall and Sadie Gibbs making their AEW debut.
Peter Avalon came out and cut a promo about how much Pittsburgh sports teams sucked and the town was full of losers. This really isn’t working. The cheap heat, hopefully, is going somewhere, but it’s not great. Leva Bates then shushed Avalon saying it was for all the fans, and Avalon gave her a thumbs up. If there is one thing that isn’t working in AEW, it’s this Librarian gimmick. Avalon is actually a good wrestler, but I think he would be better suited to a different gimmick.
QT Marshal (0-0) & Peter Avalon (0-2) w/ Leva Bates vs. Sonny Kiss (1-1) & Dustin Rhodes (1-3)
Dustin got the biggest reaction here, by far, but that isn’t surprising. Kiss and Dustin could make a good tag team, but we shall see. Avalon and Bates were checking a book before starting the match, but Kiss stole the book and used Avalon as a seat while he read it. Avalon quickly tagged out to QT Marshall. Dustin Rhodes tagged in and hit two shoulder tackles.
Dustin hit two chops and went for a go over in the corner, but QT mocked his Golddust pose and stopped short of running into the corner. Dustin hit an armdrag and as Dustin hit the ropes and Sonny blind tagged in and hit a springboard clothesline. Sonny hit a standing moonsault while Dustin hit a fist drop.
Bates grabbed Sonny Kiss’s foot while he was on the apron and Avalon hit a pump kick to drop him. QT hit a vertical suplex from the apron into the middle of the ring and tagged out to Avalon. Avalon and Marshall hit a double suplex on Kiss for a 2 count. Kiss managed to hit an enziguri on Avalon, but Avalon was able to grab him again and lock on a chinlock as Kiss went to the ground in the splits.
Avalon nailed Kiss in the corner with a few punches and hit a cheap shot on Dustin. Kiss came back with a series of punches on Avalon, but QT ran in and hit a popup punch for a near fall, but Dustin made the save. Avalon went for a moonsault, but Kiss dodged. Marshall went for a handspring moonsault off the ropes, but Kiss dodged and tagged Dustin in.
Dustin ran wild, hit an uppercut on Avalon, an inverted atomic drop, a boot to the face, and finally a powerslam. Dustin then hit a powerslam on QT Marshall. Dustin hit a flying body press off the top ropes on both men. Sonny Kiss hit a hurricanrana on Marshal and then a meteora onto the floor.
Leva Bates climbed up the ropes and jumped at Dustin, but Dustin caught her and put her down. She showed him a book. Dustin put her on the top rope, shushed her, and moved out of the way when Avalon charged at the corner. Avalon crashed into Bates and Dustin hit a twisting suplex for the pinfall on Avalon.
Result: Dustin Rhodes (2-3) & Sonny Kiss (2-1)
Rating: ** (2 stars)
Solid opening tag match here as AEW might have a fun tag team with Sonny Kiss & Dustin Rhodes. Kiss will greatly benefit from having a tag team partner like Dustin Rhodes
