Do you know how many times WWE has teased a program between Sasha Banks and Bayley? It’s probably so many that you’ve stopped counting by this point.

But they did it again on this week’s episode of WWE SmackDown. Although nothing escapes Sasha Banks and Bayley fans at this point – and the two know their fans are watching so closely that their social media likes have become a Picasso palette of hidden meanings – the rest of us basic wrestling fans may have missed the subtle tease.

Banks wrestled her first match on SmackDown on FOX, defeating a formidable foe in 2019 breakout star Nikki Cross. That wasn’t the story, though.

It all got interesting when Banks had already went to the locker room to bask in the glow of another convincing victory.

For the second straight week, NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler invaded SmackDown to attack the brand’s Women’s Champion, Bayley. You know, the woman who happens to be the closest friend Banks has ever had.

Banks tried to make the save, running out of the locker room to help her friend. The thing is, Banks was late to make the save. By the time she was back in the arena, Baszler had already left into the crowd, completing yet another successful ambush of her future Survivor Series opponent.

Interestingly enough, Corey Graves made sure to mention on commentary that Banks didn’t look like she was in any hurry to make it back to the ring to help her best friend.

Maybe Graves was stirring the pot again. Since he has no real friends to speak of, he always has to try and create a rift between Banks and Bayley, and we all know how jealous he is of The Legit Boss’s accomplishments. But maybe he has a point.

Maybe Banks was a little too late to save her friend. And maybe, just maybe, she was late on purpose. We all know how, um, complicated the relationship between these two is, and while they are on the same page now, how often do two talented and ambitious heels get along?

WWE is teasing fans with a Boss ‘N’ Hug Connection breakup again, and you know what? I’m here for it. I like teases and I love it when there’s subtleties between Sasha and Bayley. They know how to play us as fans better than anyone else in this business, and I’ll gladly allow them to place us in the palms of their hands as performers.

Since Bayley will likely head into WrestleMania season as the SmackDown Women’s Champion, the planting of seeds is even more intriguing. Because if Sasha Banks wins the 2020 Women’s Royal Rumble – and she looks like an early favorite – The Legit Boss will have to make a choice.

She’ll either look for revenge on Becky Lynch, who beat her in a Match of the Year candidate of inside Hell in a Cell, or she’ll ask for a dream match against her wrestling soulmate Bayley.

Did I mention that I love wrestling?
