When Rey Mysterio was booked to face newly crowned WWE Champion Brock Lesnar, I believed the match was set up to accomplish a couple of things.

First and foremost, to solidify The Beast’s move from Friday Night SmackDown to Monday Night RAW; avoid a triple threat WWE champions match between the Red, Blue, and Yellow brand at Survivor Series, as it may have been choppy considering the three champs (Lesnar, Adam Cole and Bray Wyatt’s Fiend, respectively) involved and deflected from the storylines in their brand.

Moreover, I saw this match as another opportunity to showcase Lesnar’s unstoppable persona (not that this is really needed at this point). I didn’t necessarily see a squash match, as I do believe Rey-Rey could (and will) surprise the WWE Universe on Sunday by giving Brock a run for his money, but I did (initially) believe that Lesnar would emerge the powerful victor when all was said and done.

I’m not sure if I think that anymore. In fact, there is a big part of me now that believes Mysterio could defeat Brock, and pull out a championship win.

For those who may not have caught this week’s RAW, Paul Heyman cut a backstage promo proposing that this Sunday’s championship match between the two men become a No Holds Barred, No DQ bout, “to make things interesting”, as he put it. He also teased that Rey Mysterio’s attack on Lesnar some weeks ago may have caused The Beast a minor injury.

Heyman was clear that Lesnar was “fine;” however, it still added to the speculation that Lesnar may not be 100 percent for his Survivor Series title defense.

Rey Mysterio vs. Brock Lesnar (as is) would have been an interesting match, but highly predictable for the Beast to retain. While Heyman may be trying to “level” the field for an “injured” client, the truth is, a No Holds Barred bout really benefits Mysterio in the end and offers him an advantage to use anything (and everything) to not only keep those German suplexes at bay, but those devastating F-5 as well.

It can also help to keep Lesnar down, and knock Brock out for a three-count pin. This stipulation gives Rey-Rey a true and fighting chance considering their weight, height, and overall power difference.

Also, keep in mind there’s a chance (if he retains) that Brock could disappear until Royal Rumble after Survivor Series (as has usually been the case for these last couple years). This is a move that has annoyed the WWE Universe to no end, yet has become an ongoing trend. Therefore, it does seem a little eyebrow-raising that the company is keeping his schedule under wraps.

It also could open up a door for where by defeating The Beast and becoming a four time World Champion, Rey Mysterio could potentially “hurt” Lesnar to a degree where Brock is not visible in storylines due to an injury. Hence, giving a storyline reason to write Brock off television, rather than him just disappearing.

Which would be a breath of fresh air. A Rey-Rey win would be unexpected, it would honor his return and legacy within the company, it could also truly hype up a huge return for Brock Lesnar come the 2020 Royal Rumble.

Can this really happen? I’m hoping it does. Not only as a Rey Mysterio fan, but also in an effort to see both high-tier championships profiled on TV and pay-per-views, for the rest of 2019.
