Kevin Owens shocked WWE fans by showing up for the WarGames match at the most recent NXT TakeOver, and the story of how he appeared at the event is sure to lift your spirits.

From Sasha Banks to Sami Zayn, NXT alumni have a special connection to WWE’s rising third brand, especially if they won a title there. Kevin Owens was a star on the independent scene, but he truly became a superstar in WWE during his run as NXT Champion with the “Prizefighter” gimmick.

Owens has been killing it in 2019 as a babyface and looks poised to be one of WWE’s top babyfaces in 2020. He may even be one of the favorites to win the 2020 Royal Rumble, though others like Roman Reigns may be better bets.

Recently, Owens gave WWE fans a beautiful throwback moment, appearing inside the men’s NXT TakeOver: WarGames match to hand the lovable jerk of an NXT Champion Adam Cole a Stunner.

He was the final member of Tommaso Ciampa’s team and played a critical role in the babyfaces conquering Cole’s side inside WarGames.

Recently, Owens appeared on Corey Graves’ After The Bell podcast to talk about what led to his appearance and apparently it started as part of an inside joke that led to an actual reunion.

A hat tip to Louis Dangoor of WrestleTalk for the quote:

"“Well, so the first thing — I mean, it’s been a constant throughout the last few years where any time I hear of anybody at NXT getting injured, or for some reason not being able to make a show. Whether it’s a storyline or not, I always send Triple H the same text, which is ‘Hey, if you need somebody I’m here, hahahaha.’ And you know, we always have that kind of little insider joke.”“So the same thing happened when I heard Gargano was off Takeover. I immediately texted him, saying, ‘I hear Johnny’s out, I’m available.’ And then this time, the answer was, ‘Well, that’s actually a possibility, I’m looking into it.’ I was like, ‘Oh, sh*t. All right.’ And then he called me in the middle of my Europe tour a couple weeks ago, and let me know that it was gonna happen.”"

That’s incredible. While it was tough to see Johnny Gargano, who is Mr. TakeOver, dealing with an injury and unable to team up with his wrestling soulmate in Ciampa, WWE fans got the next best thing with a KO/NXT reunion.
