On Saturday night, Marty Scurll made a surprise appearance at NWA Into The Fire in the midst of speculation around his status with Ring of Honor.

Marty Scurll is reportedly a free agent, as his contract with ROH expired on Nov. 30. This led many fans to believe he’s heading to AEW to reunite with The Elite.

However, he raises new questions about his contract status when he showed up at Into The Fire.

It’s unclear what this means for his future with ROH, but NWA wouldn’t be a bad destination for Scurll. In fact, it could be a perfect fit for him.

In the main event, the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion, Nick Aldis, successfully defended his title against James Storm in a two out of three falls match. Afterward, the lights went out and Scurll entered the GPB Studios. The show closed with a staredown in the ring and the tease of an interview with David Marquez.

Scurll and Aldis have a storied history together. In April, “The Villain” challenged Aldis for the NWA Worlds Championship in a fantastic match at the Crockett Cup. Prior to that, the two had several matches together in the UK from 2006 to early 2008. So, there is plenty of material to work with and this could make for a great rivalry.

Moreover, Scurll would make a great foil for Aldis, who has taken on the role as the face of the company. Aldis is clearly popular with Powerrr’s audience, but he needs an opponent and feud big enough to draw in new viewers. A program with Marty Scurll would definitely the bill.

Furthermore, “The Villain” seems like exactly the type of guy the promotion wants. His in-ring style fits their old school aesthetic and he’s contemporary enough to appeal to newer fans. Also, Scurll’s character won’t feel out of place on NWA Powerrr. His look fits the time period they’re reproducing and he’s capable of exhibiting the right amount of camp to take part in their storylines.

As for his contract situation, it’s unclear if he plans to resign with Ring of Honor and AEW still feels like an inevitable destination for him. But going to the NWA gives Scurll the unique opportunity to be a big fish in a small pond. He wouldn’t get that chance with AEW, WWE, or New Japan because they all have so many marquee names.

For now, the NWA could be the best place for Marty Scurll. His odds of eventually becoming NWA Worlds Champion and a main eventer there are much higher than his chances of winning a world title with his other options. Given his current situation with ROH, one would have to imagine that’s important to him.

It would be hard to believe he would leave the company and go somewhere else where he can’t play a bigger part. For that reason, fans and insiders alike should’ve seen the NWA as a match made in heaven for Marty Scurll all along. His appearance at Into The Fire could be just the beginning. For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
