WWE fans haven’t seen former UFC star Cain Velasquez in a televised match since his in-ring debut on Oct. 31 at Crown Jewel, but the splash signing is reportedly booked for the Royal Rumble in January.

It sounds like WWE will pull out all the stops for the Royal Rumble Pay Per View on Jan. 26 at Minute Maid Park. There are rumors Edge could return, which would be beyond shocking, and fans are waiting for both a Shayna Baszler call-up and a Ronda Rousey return at the upcoming Rumble. And that’s not even considering Brock Lesnar’s WWE Title opponent or the dream match (Part II) between Asuka and Becky Lynch for the Raw Women’s Championship.

According to the Wrestling Observer News’ Dave Meltzer, Cain Velasquez is expected to make his return to a WWE ring on Jan. 26 at the Rumble, adding more star power to the Big 5 PPV.

Per Meltzer, the Rumble is Velasquez’s next booking, and while things are always subject to change in the wild world of WWE, it looks like this is a safe bet.

Since Lesnar is booked for a Rumble program next after sitting on the sidelines since his Survivor Series win over Rey Mysterio, fans have a rematch from Crown Jewel on their minds between Velasquez and Lesnar. Recently, a report surfaced that Velasquez has heat from WWE, but that shouldn’t affect their plans for him.

Rumors have indicated WWE are hoping for a Tyson Fury vs. Brock Lesnar match at WrestleMania 36, but if the stars don’t align, then we could see Velasquez vs. Lesnar. Though Bobby Lashley vs. Lesnar would probably be a more popular option among fans than either of those matches, particularly Fury vs. Lesnar.

That possibility, however, is worth keeping in mind as we think about possible Rumble opponents for Lesnar. Velasquez is a fantastic athlete, legitimate fighter, and a pro wrestler capable of doing a lot more than what WWE normally asks of MMA stars on the main roster, so we’ll have to see if WWE unleash him at the Rumble, assuming he does get a match at the show.
