WWE Rumors: Two more possible Royal Rumble opponents for Brock Lesnar
Brock Lesnar is expected to have a rematch with Cain Velasquez for the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble Pay Per View, but if that match doesn’t materialize, then the rumor mill points towards two full-time superstars who could face The Beast Incarnate.
WWE fans are used to not seeing Brock Lesnar for long stretches of time, seeing as how the last two WrestleManias have involved The Beast facing a member of The Shield as champion while using the whole “absentee” champ storyline to build heat. Another year of this isn’t ideal, but it gets even less palatable when the endpoint at WrestleMania is a possible match between boxer Tyson Fury and Lesnar.
The Beast is scheduled to wrestle at the Royal Rumble, per usual, and his opponent is most likely Cain Velasquez. Both men faced each other for the title in Saudi Arabia last year, and since both men are booked for the Rumble, a one-on-one match makes sense.
But if WWE can’t work that match out logistically, then Cageside Seats’ mention two more names who could face Lesnar at the Rumble: Kevin Owens and Randy Orton.
Between the two of them, Owens is by far the more exciting opponent, since he and Lesnar have never faced off before. We’ve seen Orton vs. Lesnar at SummerSlam 2016, in which Lesnar legitimately concussed Orton. So that could be used in the build to their match at the Rumble, but wrestling fans still wouldn’t be interested in that bout.
The only negative with Owens vs. Lesnar at the Rumble is that it could lead to nothing, just like Finn Balor’s loss to Lesnar last year. We got to see a great build to the match and a great match itself, but it seems like a thing of the past. Balor didn’t have a major role at WrestleMania, and he’s moved on to better things in NXT since then.
Owens, meanwhile, is a sleeper to win the Royal Rumble, and fans dream of him beating Lesnar at WrestleMania. Quite frankly, that’s a pipe dream, since it’s far more likely for Roman Reigns to defeat The Fiend in Tampa after winning the Rumble in Houston. So in that case, Owens vs. Lesnar at the Rumble, regardless of the outcome, is better than nothing at all.
