NXT: Predicting the 2019 Year-End Award winners
TakeOver of the Year: NXT TakeOver: New York
Look, all of these TakeOvers were so great, you could basically pick one out of a hat and most fans would be fine with whatever the choice is. In terms of quality, the margins between these shows are so small, it often comes down to whatever your personal preferences are rather than anything that was objectively good or bad.
Much like some of the other categories, recency bias may play a factor in this – fans are likely to pick the show that’s freshest in their mind – but instead of picking TakeOver: WarGames here, I’m gonna go with TakeOver: New York for the surprise win.
Yes, the pre-Survivor Series TakeOver delivered a heaping helping of memorable moments — Dakota Kai’s heel turn, Rhea Ripley winning WarGames, Kevin Owens’ one-night return — but the feel-good moment of Johnny Gargano finally winning the NXT Championship pushes TakeOver: New York over the top.
Additionally, that show also featured a phenomenal tag team encounter between the then-War Raiders and Ricochet & Aleister Black in what was the latter’s NXT swan song, a WWE United Kingdom Championship match that got better as it went along, a fun four-way match for the NXT Women’s title, and a good North American Title match.
