AEW: The TNT Championship would be perfect for Darby Allin
AEW have unearthed one of wrestling’s fastest-rising stars in Darby Allin, and the new TNT Championship would be a perfect way to put him over as a star who has already arrived.
Darby Allin has been ticketed for greatness in AEW, and his destiny as a future star was planted early when he took Cody Rhodes to his limit in an acclaimed match at Fyter Fest. With a brooding theme song, sick face paint, and a demeanor that strikes the perfect contrast between chillness and intensity, Allin is a character who just clicks.
This week, AEW announced the highly-anticipated introduction of a men’s mid-card title, called the TNT Championship. Essentially a television title on par with WWE’s or NJPW’s Intercontinental Title, the TNT Championship will likely showcase up-and-coming stars and workhorses who can put on great matches nearly every week while preparing for a leap to the world title stage.
Allin has future world champion written all over him. Fans cannot get enough of Allin, whose “Trust Falls” and high-risk wrestling style, in addition to his undeniably slick athleticism, provide plenty of entertainment value. And, again, he’s already one of All Elite Wrestling’s best characters.
AEW will have a tournament to determine the first TNT Champion, and this tournament will begin on the Apr. 8 episode of Dynamite.
The promotion’s official Twitter account already announced one half of the tournament bracket, and Allin is a part of it. He’ll face another rising star in The Inner Circle’s Sammy Guevara, while Cody Rhodes will square off against Shawn Spears in another rematch. The other half of the bracket will be announced on the Apr. 1 episode of Dynamite.
As impressive as Guevara is and as easy as it is to hate him, Allin absolutely needs to win this match. He’s the one with the momentum and star power right now. And if he and Cody win, they will be ready for a semifinals rematch from their epic match at Fyter Fest, and I wouldn’t bet against Allin, with a title opportunity in the final on the line, to pull off the big win he just couldn’t complete at Fyter Fest.
PAC and other stars could await on the right side of the TNT Championship tournament’s bracket, and PAC would be a wonderful villain for Allin to conquer in a massive get-over moment – followed by the preceding massive, full-circle win over Cody – in the final to officially etch himself in the history books as the TNT Champion.
AEW know they need to continue to push their up-and-coming stars and get them on the true star level that Kenny Omega, Cody Rhodes, PAC, Matt Hardy, and others are currently on, Wrestlers like AEW Women’s Champion Nyla Rose, Jungle Boy, Sadie Gibbs, Big Swole, and, of course, Allin are among those with that kind of potential.
Early on, Allin has stood out as the first one ready for more responsibility, and AEW can feel confident in his ability to reach another level as the first TNT Champion
