WWE: Becky Lynch being among highest paid wrestlers is a big deal
It has been announced that Becky Lynch has topped the top 10 highest paid wrestlers in WWE at the moment. Here’s why that is such a big deal.
Today, Forbes released the new 2020 list for WWE’s highest paid wrestlers in the company. The top five was dominated by the usual suspects who usually occupy such a list every year. Roman Reigns, Brock Lesnar, Randy Orton, etc. No surprise there.
Even the final four doesn’t hold many surprises, especially when they include McMahon family alums Triple H, Shane and Stephanie McMahon who profit off of both wrestling and their respective exec positions within WWE.
Smack dab in the middle of it all at number six, however, is a bit more surprising. Well, in the context of how successful she’s been in the past year or so, it’s not that surprising, but surprising considering all of the factors that contribute to this being a big deal.
We’re talking about Becky Lynch, who tops the list for the first time and is currently the only woman in history to top the list solely as a wrestler.
Stephanie has done so multiple times, but again, she’s done with her combined revenue as a wrestler, on-screen authority figure, and of course real life Chief Brand Officer. The fact that Lynch became this close to making the top five just on the strength of her ability is impressive.
This is also impressive considering that last year’s highest paid woman in WWE was Ronda Rousey. In Rousey’s case, she walked into WWE as a bankable name based on her success in UFC and other parts of entertainment.
Ever since becoming The Man two summers ago, Becky Lynch has had a steady climb up the mountain, even as far as surpassing usual suspects like Roman Reigns and John Cena as WWE’s top merch seller at one point.
Let’s not forget that once she signed her new contract with the company earlier this year, it signalled better, higher contracts for underpaid women’s talents like Dana Brooke and Sasha Banks.
Not only is Becky Lynch’s success opening doors for other women in WWE, WWE investing in their women based on the success stories of Lynch and Rousey is a good sign in itself.
