WWE: It’s time for a Kairi Sane singles babyface run
Kairi Sane may be one-half of the Kabuki Warriors, but WWE has to bring back the babyface “Pirate Princess” to remind fans of her full potential on WWE Raw.
Nia Jax has been a talking point across professional wrestling this past week. Widely because of what happened in her recent match against Kairi Sane from the latest WWE Raw. As people focus on Jax’s action, the match also highlighted an issue around Sane’s use within the WWE.
“The Pirate Princess” is yet another special talent on the WWE roster that seems to be out of place as fans and media members wish the promotion would find something else to do with the former champion.
Sane loss to Jax for the second time in a row on this past Monday Night Raw. Other than her count out victory over Natalya back in February, Sane has not won a singles match in an extended period. How long?
According to Cagematch, her last singles victory by pinfall or submission came back in April of 2019 where she defeated Peyton Royce on SmackDown Live. More than one year since, we haven’t seen Sane get her hand raised on her own.
Outside of that she is been leveraged as a tag team component, mainly with Asuka as the Kabuki Warriors. While that has become one of the more enjoyable pairings in bare women’s tag team division; Sane’s role has been greatly limited.
In many ways, she is used as the feud builder for whomever Asuka is battling and that comes with a losing effort. It has time for WWE Creative to remind fans that Sane is more than capable on her own.
She is a former NXT women’s champion and won the inaugural Mae Young tournament back in 2017. Her momentum did not end there where she won the 2018 female and overall NXT competitor of the year.
And that only considers Sane’s WWE tenure. Her time spent in Japan helped build her into one of the top women’s wrestlers in the world, before being nerfed by WWE booking.
However, there is a way for the WWE to work their way out of this situation and that comes at the hands of Sane’s partner, Asuka. Asuka continually is always elevated as a threat to the women’s title, while Sane continues to lose. She was also the one pinned with Nikki Cross and Alexa Bliss took the titles at WrestleMania.
The scenario is there for Asuka to turn on Sane, blaming her for the downturn that they are both on at this point in their career. Many have felt that Sane has the potential to be a strong babyface within the women’s division and a scary Asuka, looking more like her character Kana, would help her get there.
WWE has done a great job in the past with the underdog story. Sane fits right into that role.
Saying that WWE “buries” wrestlers is a phrase that is thrown around too often. Sane is far from buried, but the idea that she is under-utilized is a better argument. The Japanese star came into the WWE as a babyface that fans got behind.
Plans have changed, but after Money in the Bank there is an opportunity to rebuild her character as a capable threat in the women’s division and it starts with her tag team partner, Asuka.
