AEW and ROH is the dream collab we never knew we wanted
Many of us have been dying to see AEW join forces with New Japan Pro Wrestling, but thanks to Marty Scurll opening the door, a partnership with ROH suddenly sounds more ideal.
AEW is well known for collaborating with several different promotions around the world. In some way or another, in just over a year, All Elite Wrestling has worked with the likes of OWE (Oriental Wrestling), AAA, and numerous smaller known independent wrestling promotions.
In small doses, we’ve even seen hints of a relationship with NJPW. While both parties have confirmed that they do not have a working relationship currently, Chris Jericho performed at Wrestle Kingdom last January while he was still the AEW World Champion. Meanwhile, the current AEW Champion Jon Moxley also happens to hold NJPW’s IWGP US Title at the moment.
With that said, the way NJPW President Harold Meij spoke on a possible relationship with Sports Illustrated by acknowledging they “continue to watch with interest,” that still does not guarantee a future relationship in the future.
We can wait with batted breath forever regarding the state of this relationship, but the truth of the matter is that it is still likely that such a relationship may never come to fruition, at least any time. What does suddenly seem more feasible, however, is that AEW could work with Ring of Honor.
Such a relationship sprung to mind recently when Marty Scurll spoke on the ROHStrong podcast and spoke on a possible relationship with AEW. Speaking of his former elite co-horts, the booker/wrestler said he and Ring of Honor were “definitely willing to work with each other. It’s just a matter of timing, I guess.”
Ring of Honor isn’t typically in the conversation when mention promotions that we’d want to see AEW collaborate with and that more so has to do with a rather dramatic 2019 that ROH had. Behind the scenes, there were backstage incidents involving the likes of Kelly Klein while in front of the camera, fans endured a disappointing World Title reign from Matt Taven that soured some away from the product.
There were a lot of missteps on the company’s behalf, but in 2020, they’ve taken smarter, admirable steps as a company to do the right thing. Namely, in the middle of our current pandemic, they continue to pay their employees and have decide to postpone all tapings until things settle down.
As much as we are salivating at the thought of a AEW/ROH relationship bringing about things like Scurll’s return to The Elite or dream matches like Jon Moxley vs. Rush, it would be nice for AEW to deliver their co-sign to ROH as a boost of morale for fans who may have soured on them by staring a working relationship.
A partnership between AEW and ROH would be beneficial to both ROH and the fans regaining their support/respect for the company.
