Scorpio Sky Has Future AEW World Champion Written All Over Him
For the past two weeks, AEW has been airing vignettes featuring Scorpio Sky and it’s clear that he has a bright future with the company.
A prevalent criticism about All Elite Wrestling (AEW) is that there aren’t any black singles competitor in their world title picture. It’s certainly valid and they honestly haven’t done much to address this flaw. After all, they let a bonafide up-and-coming star, Chris Bey, slip through their fingers. On the other hand, Scorpio Sky was one of their breakout stars in 2019.
Sky initially emerged during the AEW World Tag Team Championship Tournament last fall when he replaced Christopher Daniels in the first round. He went on to put on a dazzling performance with one shoe on as he and Frankie Kazarian moved on to the semifinals on the Oct. 16 episode of Dynamite. A few weeks later, SoCal Uncensored upset The Lucha Brothers to become the inaugural AEW World Tag Team Champions.
The win made Scorpio Sky the company’s first African American champion. In November, Sky and Kazarian successfully defended the titles against The Lucha Brothers and Private Party at Full Gear. Later, Scorpio used a small package in their second defense against Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara to retain the titles. In the process, he handed Jericho his first loss with AEW, which inconceivably granted Sky the opportunity to challenge him for the world title.
Unfortunately, he lost to Jericho in AEW’s return to Sears Center Arena on Nov. 28. Still, he proved that he could be a viable contender for the AEW World Championship. The response he received in Indianapolis and Chicago solidified his commencement as one of the newest stars.
Scorpio has actually had some success as a singles competitor in the past. Mainstream fans know it but Sky has held singles titles at several indie promotions including Rev Pro and Wrestle Circus, where he was the last Ringmaster Champion.
In July of 2011, he became NWA Championship Wrestling From Hollywood’s first Television Champion. Championship Wrestling later changed the name of the title after they parted ways with the NWA.
Today, it’s known as the United Wrestling Network Television Championship. To date, Scorpio Sky is the longest-reigning champion in the title’s history as his first reign lasted for 378 days. He also holds the record for the most tenures as the UWN Television Champion with five reigns.
Sky came into 2020 with the most wins in AEW, twelve. In addition, he finished 2019 with one of the best records in the company with only four losses. To put this in perspective, Kenny Omega, the only other wrestler who competed in sixteen matches last year, had ten wins and six losses.
That’s right. Scorpio Sky quietly had a better year than The Elite’s biggest star. He and Kazarian also successfully defended their titles against The Young Bucks in December. On the Jan. 22 episode of Dynamite, SCU lost the tag title to Omega and Adam Page in a stellar opening match. They failed to regain them in their rematch a few weeks later.
This week, Sky returned to television but he maintained his momentum over the last two weeks with the help of a two-part vignette. In the first half, Scorpio revealed that he suffered a career-threatening back injury in 2008 but he miraculously made it back to the ring. Even though he stumbled when he returned, he kept with it and ultimately formed SCU with Kazarian and Daniels.
Sky eventually grew alongside the two established stars thanks to “The Worst Town I’ve Ever Been In” catchphrase and his appearances on Being the Elite.
If his breakout year in 2019 didn’t make it clear that AEW sees something in Scorpio Sky, the two vignettes should have. As an extended member of the Elite and one of the company’s original signees, he is in a great position to become one of its brightest new stars. It kind of a shame that he wasn’t available to compete in the TNT Championship tournament.
However, AEW won’t be able to keep Sky in the mid-card for much longer. He will make a great world champion someday.
