After defeating Edge at Backlash, Randy Orton is in a prime position to once again reach the pinnacle of WWE. At WWE Extreme Rules, The Viper should defeat Drew McIntyre for the WWE Championship.

Last night at WWE Backlash, Edge and Randy Orton delivered a fantastic wrestling match that showcased the talents of both men. Earning the decisive victory, The Viper has come out of the “greatest wrestling match ever” on top of the wrestling landscape. With Edge reportedly out with a tricep tear, now is the perfect time to capitalize on Orton’s newfound momentum.

On July 19th, WWE will present their next pay-per-view event; Extreme Rules. At the event, it’s all but guaranteed that Drew McIntyre will once again defend his WWE Championship. McIntyre is fresh off a victory of his own, having just defended the gold against Bobby Lashley.

However, there is certainly unfinished business between McIntyre and Lashley, meaning that a rematch will likely take place. Extreme Rules could be where that rematch occurs, and it would be a wise decision on WWE’s part to consider adding Orton to the mix.

As it currently stands, there aren’t a lot of superstars for Orton to feud with on RAW. Rey Mysterio and Seth Rollins are entering into the later stages of their rivalry, Apollo Crews is establishing himself against a mid-card consisting of Andrade, Kevin Owens and Angel Garza, and Brock Lesnar is still on his hiatus. Considering that Orton’s stock is the highest it’s been in quite some time, inserting him into the WWE title picture is a good idea.

Should WWE choose to include Orton in the rivalry between Lashley and McIntyre, than it presents a way for McIntyre to lose the gold without being pinned. Bobby Lashley could take the fall (possibly due to interference by Lesnar to set-up their feud), which in turn could allow McIntyre to save face.

Then, McIntyre could regain the WWE Championship in a rematch at SummerSlam, allowing him to earn a second title reign while also scoring a victory against a veteran like the Viper. The purpose of having the title change at Extreme Rules is that it’d give Orton a chance to capitalize on his newfound momentum, and in the process changeup a WWE Championship scene that at times feels predictable.
