The Path of Cage – A marathon, not a sprint.

There’s plenty of reason to put faith in Brian Cage as a wrestler. Acquiring a talent that boasts his caliber is certainly a boost for All Elite Wrestling. At Double or Nothing, he captured the title opportunity during a ladder match against seven other competitors. Which made quite the impression.

First impressions are said to be the most important. Mine wasn’t a positive one. I’ll humbly admit that. As a fan, I resent having to witness other wrestlers who hold a longer tenure with the company bypassed by the latest heel walking into the promotion. Once in a blue moon, fine, I cannot deny spontaneity is needed to keep things fresh.

Two months in a row, we’re witnessing a similar recipe at play here, not a fresh approach.

I don’t resent him having that spotlight, quite the opposite, the rushed ascension worries me.

Recent developments on Dark and Dynamite involving Brian Cage and Jon Moxley has offered some reassurances. Their build-up is sparking up interest,  where the challenger, Cage, is looking the most dominant. He appears a greater threat than Brodie Lee ever did. But to make this man champion, would aim to undo the good work they’ve achieved up to this point.

What do I mean by that?

Having Brian Cage reach the top of the mountain this early would poke holes into his build. He needs to look strong that’s an absolute priority at this point. In terms of longevity, Cage is better off being the man that ‘could’ have done it and keep reminding the audience of that fact.

You keep that fire alive until we see live audiences back, maintain his prescience high in the rankings, and aim to make him a contender once more. Making a star isn’t a microwave meal, it’s like a broth or a stew, you need to invest time for the better results.

If you bring up to the top of the card, the audience will hone in on how that move devalues the ranking system, the championship itself, and put his spot into question. The fans need to see him battling other established performers before they can envisage him representing the whole promotion.

I can see Brian Cage becoming a future AEW champion, could prove a big deal this year. As far as AEW Fyter Fest 2020 is concerned, this isn’t the right time and that’s said with his best interests at heart. He needs to look strong for an extensive amount of time and a moral victory over the champion will serve him longer than an actual one.
