The Ascension are ready for The Awakening in their wrestling careers after WWE.

Although they were former NXT Tag Team Champions, Konnor, now “Big Kon” and Viktor, now “Vik”, never quite had their feed under them in WWE. From the moment they debuted on the main roster, they were buried by loathsome heel announcer JBL, and when the brand split occurred, they were the resident joke tag team on SmackDown.

But at their peak in NXT, The Ascension were monsters. They were one of the most feared tag teams in wrestling and should have been a mainstay in the tag division on the WWE main roster. More impressively, they showed excellent promo skills, comedic timing, and creativity in their acclaimed skits with the Fashion Police on SmackDown.

Vik and Big Kon were among the releases soon after the COVID-19 pandemic reached the United States, as WWE decided to put profit margins over people when making these cuts.

The Ascension are ready for the next step whenever wrestling is feasible for them, and they came up with a great new tag team name that certainly one-ups The Revival attempting to steal “The Revolt” from an established tag team.

In an interview with WrestleZone’s managing editor Bill Pritchard, Big Kon and Vik stated that they will now refer to themselves as “The Awakening”.

At first, they were thinking of going by “FKA”, which I suspect is a nod to the “formerly known as” that many wrestlers get slapped with (including by writers like me) after they leave WWE.

Big Kon said of the new name:

"“The Awakening. It’s like it’s the next step up from The Ascension. It’s still got that connection so the fans can understand it and it’s something that Vik and I think is badass regardless.”"

He’s absolutely on the money. It does sound like “The Awakening” comes after an ascension, as it’s the fulfillment of that initial rise, metaphorically speaking. And yes, it is both badass and easy to understand, which is pretty much all you need in a wrestling tag team name.

Next. Hiring Tessa Blanchard would be a big mistake. dark

It’s impossible to predict what’s next for wrestling, but Big Kon and Vik showed in their segments with Tyler Breeze and Fandango that they have the talent to make an impact in any role that they land. They’d be an asset to any promotion’s tag team division with their in-ring chemistry, powerful wrestling styles, and hilarious character work.
