1. It’s a step toward the diversity AEW promised

Listen, AEW has done plenty of things right in its first year of operation. Consistently signing, promoting, and presenting wrestlers who aren’t white men hasn’t been one of those things.

The company talked a big game about inclusivity at the outset, but, outside of a few moments here and there, its actions haven’t matched its rhetoric. When you’re getting outflanked by this guy and the former island of problematic wrestlers known as IMPACT Wrestling in terms of presenting diverse faces, you know you have a serious problem.

Whenever fans bring this up, they are often met with examples of garden variety tokenism or statements that claim AEW doesn’t do “diversity for diversity” sake.

Of course, that first statement ignores the scarcity of non-white voices in management positions and the second does nothing but perpetuate the ridiculous notion that only white people are truly qualified for certain jobs. And having Sky beat Cody for the TNT Title won’t erase those issues overnight, but it would be a good first step toward showing the promotion is at least somewhat serious about that mission statement.
