WWE SummerSlam: Sonya Deville must defeat Mandy Rose
WWE needs to keep Sonya Deville hot and that means picking up a win on Sunday
Many Rose versus Sonya Deville is one of the most interesting matches on the SummerSlam card. WWE Creative has struggled to book angles with the women on the roster that do not involve the titles. Yet, Deville and Rose turned from what was an eye-rolling situation into a captivating story with some actual substance. The expectation is that Rose should come out of the event with the win and her hair but looking at the overall stakes this should be a match that Deville wins to continue her boost of momentum.
Let us start with the reasons why Rose should not win this match. Daily DDT lead, Kevin Parvizi laid out some solid ideas behind the push to have Rose have her hand raised. Yes, she has already suffered losses to Deville in this feud. The WWE has struggled to develop any new women’s babyfaces with consistent booking. Since the angle with Otis has emerged, Rose has become a face to watch in the promotion. But that is not enough of a reason to ensure Rose gets the victory on Sunday.
If anything, WWE Creative has shown that they are willing to force feed viewers specific wrestlers and angles, regardless what fans say they want to enjoy. If Rose takes the loss on Sunday, there is nothing to stop them from 50/50 booking multiple victories for Rose right after. Regardless of Sunday’s outcome, viewers should expect Rose to stay in a prominent role on SmackDown not only as a singles performer, but because she is also still linked to Otis who has the Money in the Bank briefcase. There’s reasons why she will remain relevant, win, or lose and the same cannot be said about Deville.
Sonya Deville has the potential WWE needs to leverage
Deville has shown that she is playing an excellent character that has drummed up interest with fans. This has been growing since her time on Total Divas and has fully exploded into a following that is needed for the women’s roster today. Keeping Deville credible with a victory not only keeps her relevant but allows her to branch off in other directions that will help other women on the roster. Imagine Deville against the likes of Naomi, Nikki Cross or even an eventual feud with a face Sasha Banks or Bayley for the title – all those feuds become more credible by keeping consistent momentum behind Deville.
Plus, representation is important in today’s professional wrestling industry. Deville is someone who can become a cross-over name for Deville who represents a segment of viewership that WWE has failed to fully present effectively on television. Keeping her relevant, rather than having her taking losses at this point is important for an individual that can be developed into a name when WWE needs as many new reasons to watch and quickly.
Sonya Deville is one of the few bright spots on the women’s roster outside of Bayley and Banks. Cooling her off with a loss to Mandy Rose is a mistake that WWE Creative should not make at this time. Keep building her heat with a win at SummerSlam as she becomes one of the most improved stars of 2020.
