WWE Raw: IIconics disbanding means Peyton Royce push is incoming
The IIconics lost a tag match on WWE Raw with a perplexing stipulation, and now one of the most beloved tag teams is no more.
At the beginning of WWE Raw, wrestling fans were informed that Ruby Riott and Liv Morgan would be competing in yet another tag match with the IIconics despite having already defeated them on the Payback preshow in what seemed like an unofficial No. 1 Contender’s match for the Women’s Tag Titles.
Except this match on Raw would have actual stakes, even higher than what was expected. Not only was the match a No. 1 Contender’s match for the tag titles, recently won by Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler at Payback, but the losing tag team would be no more.
Yeah.
Wrestling fans didn’t want to see either tag team disband. But they had a sinking feeling it would be time to say goodbye to the IIconics, since Ruby and Liv had only recently reunited in an emotional segment on the Kevin Owens Show.
The IIconics have been one of WWE’s most important duos
And lo and behold, the babyfaces won – by roll-up, no less. WWE fans were despondent as they watched Billie Kay and Peyton Royce tearfully beg and console each other, knowing their years-long tag team would have to end.
As their name suggests, the IIconics have been a crucial part of WWE’s tag team scene since the Women’s Tag Titles were instituted in 2019. They won the titles at WrestleMania 35. But even before that, they were a great duo in NXT, competing for NXT Titles together.
The IIconics’ breakup, though, means big things for at least one member of the former tag team. Kay should still have a bright future, but Royce is the wrestler Vince McMahon is reportedly extremely high on.
Earlier in August, WrestlingNews.Co’s Paul Davis referenced a report from the Wrestling Observer News’ Dave Meltzer that Vince sees Bianca Belair and Peyton Royce, both WWE Raw superstars, as singles stars in the company.
Peyton Royce could compete for the WWE Raw Women’s Title soon
Bianca has always been a singles competitor and is an obvious star. Royce? She hasn’t been competing for singles titles since NXT and has never won one before despite her talent.
Royce is ready to get a big push on Monday nights. Asuka is currently occupied with Mickie James, Nia Jax, and Shayna Baszler as possible rivals in a multi-women’s match at Clash of Champions, but Royce could be her eventual opponent later in 2020 or heading into 2021.
It’s awful to see Royce and Kay no longer teammates, as they were one of the bedrocks of the Women’s Tag Team Division. But if you are a fan of Royce, look for her to start competing for the Raw Women’s Title soon enough.
