Mickie James and WWE Raw Women’s Champion Asuka had a match with a much-discussed finish on this week’s show.

Asuka and Mickie James had a classic match together at NXT TakeOver: Toronto four years ago, which eventually led to WWE signing the six-time Women’s Champion for another stint in the company.

James had been off television with an injuruy before making a huge return this summer, starting a feud with Natalya. On this week’s episode of Raw, though, she faced Asuka in a highly anticipated match between the two familiar opponents. Asuka, of course, is the current Raw Women’s Champion, having won the prestigious title back from Sasha Banks at SummerSlam.

The match between James and Asuka was excellent at first, with both women showing that their chemistry is still there. But the match was marred by controversy, as it puzzilingly ended short, with the explanation being that the ref said that James was unable to continue. Fans wondered if this was planned, a botch by the referee, or an actual angle.

Mickie James sold the Asuka Lock incredibly well

According to a report from PW Insider’s Mike Johnson, the result wasn’t planned, nor was Mickie James injured. Apparently she sold the Asuka Lock so well that the referee legitimately thought the match needed to be stopped.

Per WrestlingNews.Co’s Paul Davis, people within WWE believe that a rematch between James and Asuka will “likely” take place “soon”, and they stated that WWE will take advantage of the chatter around the controversial finish on Raw.

Many fans would like to see James get another run with the title, since she hasn’t won another champioship yet in her latest stint in the company. James and Asuka could have a classic at Clash of Champions, but they may not be the only people in the match if Lana and Natalya have something to say about the result of this week’s non-title bout between James and Asuka.
