Allysin Kay is an important free agent for women’s wrestling
Allysin Kay announced her free agency on Monday and wrestling fans should be excited for what’s next in her career.
Women’s wrestling is a major draw in today’s professional wrestling industry. Late Monday night, Allysin Kay broke the news that she is a free agent and ready to take independent bookings. As a multiple-time champion and a very outspoken on all things both in and out of wrestling, Kay’s free agency comes at a time when she can have a major impact, regardless of where she lands.
“As of today, I’m officially a free agent,” Kay posted on Twitter late Monday evening. “Thank you to the NWA for the opportunities, which included one of my favorite matches of my career. I am open for indy bookings and appearances. Let us get weird.”
And get weird is exactly what should happen. Not only has Kay been a champion in nearly every promotion in which she has appeared, she has been a dominant one at that. She has multiple reigns lasting more than two hundred days and on two separate occasions she reached well over seven hundred days. Standing 5’10, Kay already has a look that sets her apart from many of her heels. One of the reasons that Rhea Ripley, Raquel Gonzalez, and Charlotte Flair stand out so much on the WWE roster is because they tower over their peers. Kay fits into that mold very well, plus she can work nearly any style of match put in front of her.
Earlier this year Thunder Rosa made a surprise appearance in All Elite Wrestling. There she had a series of matches with Hikaru Shida and others, leading many to speculate that she is going to join that promotion. While that question is still up in the air, Kay should draw that same type of attention, not only from AEW but WWE as well.
Kay would fit well within WWE’s NXT division, but that group is really becoming an embarrassment of riches, making it hard for some to get time on TV even if they are deserving of it. Kay could easily put on exceptional matches with the likes of Toni Storm, Ember Moon, Io Shirai, and others.
At the same time, AEW could especially use a talented performer like Kay to bolster their ranks. Their women’s division continues to get criticism for the lack of time they are given, but Kay screams draw power in a fashion like that of Eddie Kingston. The division needs to build depth because fans are clamoring to see more of the ladies get prime booking outside of AEW Dark. Going after Kay would be a perfect move at this time.
There is no telling what is next for Allysin Kay now that she is declared herself a free agent. One thing is clear though, she is a stellar performer and every promotion in the industry should be after her talents.
