AEW: Why Red Velvet is a name to watch in the Women’s division
Red Velvet came straight from “your mama’s kitchen” and is now in one of the biggest storylines in AEW. After an impressive promo on the Jan. 27 episode of Dynamite, she is starting to make waves as a potential star in the AEW women’s division.
Velvet began competing on Dark last summer. She slowly became a constant presence, even though she suffered through a long losing streak. During her winless streak, she debuted on Dynamite in September against Dr. Britt Baker. After starting 0-9, Velvet finally scored her first victory over Elayna Black.
In her time on Dark, she faced Brandi Rhodes a couple of times. Although they were losses, Brandi clearly saw something in her. In part, she thought her action figure, Lil’ Bran Bran resembled Red Velvet. After picking up her first win, the Chief Brand Officer teamed with Velvet the following week.
Red Velvet becomes an ally for AEW’s First Couple
Pairing with Brandi has made Velvet an ally for The Nightmare Family. Back in November, Jade Cargill cut a promo on Cody Rhodes that led to Brandi coming out for an unscripted promo. Things got very heated immediately after, eventually leading to Cargill and Shaquille O’Neal challenging Cody to a match. Since Brandi is pregnant, Velvet volunteered to step up against Cargill.
Fans got their first true glimpse into Velvet when she cut a simple, but very effective promo on Cargill. Because of this, she is the perfect person to step in for Brandi. She has proved that she has their backs. On the March 3 episode of Dynamite, she’ll team up with Cody against O’Neal & Cargill.
Her mixed tag match with Cody, Cargill and Shaq will undoubtedly be the biggest match of her career. It’s going to be high profile just by having the NBA legend involved. Non-wrestling fans are likely to tune in or watch clips at the very least. This is her time to shine.
Hopefully, this leads to a bigger role for Velvet. As of now, she is not even on AEW’s official roster (Cargill is officially All Elite). This adds even more stakes to this huge bout because it could potentially lead to a contract. She could then step into a bigger babyface spot on the roster, behind Hikaru Shida, Riho, Big Swole, and Serena Deeb.
The women’s roster always needs more depth, Velvet would be a welcome official addition to the division. She has proven to be a good wrestler and very solid on the mic. As she gets more experience on TV and with a microphone, the stronger she’ll get.
I’m looking forward to seeing her “stir it up” with other women on the roster. She is on her way to being a star-in-the-making.
