AEW Dynamite Results: Moxley Prepares for his Deathmatch

How will Jon Moxley respond to Kenny Omega’s revelation that he would be fighting him in an Exploding Barbed Wire Death Match at AEW Revolution? Tonight we find out!

AEW Dynamite started fast tonight with Jon Moxley coming out to wrestle Ryan Nemeth.

Jon Moxley vs. Ryan Nemeth

Moxley slapped Nemeth and hit him with hard crossface blows. Moxley ducked a clothesline and hit a back suplex before stamping on Nemeth’s hand and trying to dislocate his fingers. Nemeth hit a dropkick, but Moxley countered a neckbreaker into a Guillotine choke and then hit the Paradigm Shift for the pinfall victory. Solid squash match to start the show.

Result: Jon Moxley

Moxley cut a promo saying that since he woke up without the AEW World Championship, he was going to crawl through landmines if he had to in order to get the title back. He said that it turns out that is exactly what he has to do against Omega at Revolution.

Moxley asked what the match brings to mind for people – maybe violence, destruction, or Japanese wrestling magazines. Moxley said that he is addicted to wrestling, and is addicted to the blood, sweat and tears, and laying his soul bear every night, and it’s something he can’t get enough of.

He thought the idea of the deathmatch is too attractive to him, even if it is a trap laid by Kenny Omega. He promised to give his fans everything, and will fight with everything has, and if his career comes to an end at AEW Revolution, it’s one hell of a way to go out.

AEW then aired a hype video, recapping the entire Omega/Moxley feud, and I am thrilled. I cannot wait for that match. Jon Moxley is the hottest babyface in wrestling, and everything he does is money right now. Honestly, he might be my favourite wrestler, though I have a hard time choosing between him, Tanahashi, and Okada.

AEW has a true, real, top babyface in Moxley and it is so hard to not love what he is doing. He come across as an absolute star. The best thing Moxley ever did was come to AEW, because he is easily on the best wrestlers going today.

Lance Archer and Fenix were talking about their match tonight with Alex Abrahantes. Fenix said Archer was the worst partner he has ever had and both of them brawled heading into tonight’s main event.

The Varsity Blonds vs. Team Taz (Ricky Starks & Bryan Cage) w/ Taz

Cage and Starks threw Pillman around the ring like ragdolls, including Cage driving Pillman into the stairs. Garrison eventually made the hot tag, running wild on both Cage and Starks. Cage cut Garrison off, but Pillman hit a flying clothesline and then the Blonds hit a dropkick/powerbomb combo that looked great. Starks kicked out, but Cage blind tagged in and Starks managed to hit a spear while Cage hit a discus clothesline before hitting the Drillclaw on Pillman for the win.

Result: Team Taz

Excellent little tag match here. The lights went off and a video of Darby Allin came on the screen with him being dragged behind a car in a body bag like he was last week, but Sting was driving the car this time. Sting opened the body bag and Allin sat up with the TNT title smiling. Sting then came out, dragging a body bag, and he had Hook in the body bag!

Sting pointed to the rafters and Darby zipped line down from them into the ring to attack Team Taz ahead of AEW Revolution. Sting hit a huge Stinger Splash on Cage before Allin hit a dive onto the floor on Starks, and Sting then hit a Scorpion Death Drop on Cage, leaving him laying in the middle of the ring. That was truly awesome. Allin and Sting looked amazing in this segment.

Tony Schiavone was backstage with Miro, Kip Sabian, and Penelope Ford, and they talked about how Orange Cassidy and Chuck Taylor ruined the wedding. Miro did most of the talking, and how he was looking forward to destroying Orange Cassidy, and then asked Chuck to come back to him because he liked him.

Someone handed a note to Tony Schiavone, asking Miro & Kip fight them at Revolution. Miro called it childish, as it was like a high school note passing, and he said he was going to teach Chuck how to be a real man.

Brandon Cutler vs. Jake Hager

Cutler came out wearing really cool gear, but I fear for his life in this match. Hanger eventually hit a wheelbarrow suplex on Hager, and then hit a second one after. Hager dominated the majority of this match, but Cutler did get a tope con giro but Hager didn’t catch Cutler at all. Hanger then took his head off with lariat and pinned him.

Result: Jake Hager

This was a good squash outside of that one spot. Santana and Ortiz came out and attacked Cutler, so the Young Bucks made the save and the called out MJF and Jericho, saying they wanted to fight right now. Jericho and MJF appeared on the screen, and they were holding a bloody Papa Buck, attacking their dad, which was hinted at last week when MJF faced off with him

. They drove Papa Buck’s head into the production truck that they took a photo with him at earlier. Matt Jackson chased after Jericho and MJF as they drove away, escaping the scene. This feud needed a simple heat angle, as it was missing that before this, and this served exactly what it needed to be.

Hangman Page vs. Isiah Kassidy

Hangman took it right to Kassidy, throwing him all over the ring, hitting a fall away slam, but Kassidy cut him off with some stomps after he tried to come back into the ring. Hangman flew out of the corner after being sent into it and took Kassidy’s head off with a lariat. Hangman hit a flying crossbody onto Kassidy on the floor, and he looked very aggressive for the first time in a long time.

Hangman had a fire lit underneath him here, and he looked incredible in this match. Hangman went to powerbomb Kassidy through the table on the floor, but Kassidy slipped out and rolled into the ring. Hangman went for the Buckshot Lariat, but Kassidy distracted the ref and Hardy shoved Page into the ring post, damaging his arm.

The Dark Order came out, and Silver told the ref that Hardy did it. She threw Hardy out of the ringside area, but the damage had already been done, and Kassidy worked over Hangman’s arm. The Dark Order stayed at ringside in support of Page, and TH2 was at ringside supporting Kassidy.

Hangman decked Kassidy with a rolling elbow, but Kassidy managed to keep working over the arm with armbars, and managed to pull Hangman’s arm over the rope when he went for a springboard clothesline on the apron. Kassidy went for a slingshot Canadian Destroyer, but Hangman caught him and hit a one armed Deadeye for the victory. This was an excellent match.

This was a very good showcase of Hangman and Kassidy, showing that Kassidy can go in a singles match. After the match, Matt Hardy came out again and told Page off for choosing the Dark Order over him. Hardy then grabbed V and threw him off the stage through a table. Good build for their match at AEW Revolution.

Kenny Omega was with Don Callis, building some sort of contraption for the Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch at AEW Revolution.

Nyla Rose vs. Britt Baker

Nyla dominated the early parts of this match, constantly overpowering Baker. Baker threw a fit and threw some garbage cans around. Nyla went for a cannonball senton in the corner, the same move that resulted in Baker missing a lot of time in 2020, as it broke Baker’s leg. Baker rolled out of the way and ended up driving Rose into the ring post. Baker got the head on Nyla for the next few minutes, heading into the ad break.

During the break, Baker ripped the turnbuckle pad off and hit a suplex on Nyla, which was impressive. Nyla fired back with clotheslines and went to the middle rope when Rebel got onto the apron. Nyla ducked a slapped and hit a uranage on the apron onto Rebel. Nyla hit a neckbreaker on Baker, but Baker kicked out at 2. Baker took a glove from Rebel to set up for the Lockjaw, but Nyla hit a chokeslam on Britt.

Nyla put Rebel in the corner and it a cannonball senton, before charging at Britt, but missing and hitting the exposed turnbuckle. Baker went for the Lockjaw, but Nyla managed to power out into a sidewalk slam. Britt managed to hit a crucifix bomb on Nyla and got a 2, but immediately transitioned into the Lockjaw. Nyla fought out again and hit a huge forearm that rocked Baker and then hit a Beast Bomb, but Baker kicked out. Baker went for a superkick and Nyla caught it and lifted Baker up for a Beast Bomb for the pinfall.

Result: Nyla Rose

Rating: ***3/4 (3.75)

This was a fantastic match that really put over the stakes of the tournament. Nyla faced difficult odds with the injured arm and overcame the 2 on 1 advantage. This was a very well booked match, and told a great story. Baker looked great in losing because it took two Beast Bombs to finish the match, and Baker managed to continuously work over Nyla’s arm. It left you thinking if things were slightly different, Baker would have won. Excellent stuff.

The announcers rand down the card for AEW Revolution, and each successive match made me more excited as they did. Ah, effective promotion, it’s refreshing.

Rey Fenix vs. Lance Archer w/ Jake Roberts– The Winner Advances to the Face of the Revolution Ladder Match at AEW Revolution

Fenix tried to take it to Archer with his greater speed throughout the early part of this match, but Roberts dumped Fenix onto the ramp by pulling him from the top turnbuckle. Fenix decided that wasn’t going to stop him, however, so he just jumped over Jake Roberts’ back into a flip dive on Archer on the floor. As Fenix looked at Roberts, Archer cut him off and started trying to slow the match down.

They went to picture in picture ads as Archer charged at Fenix and Fenix ducked, so Archer charged face first into the ring post before eating a dropkick from Fenix and rolling back into the ring. Fenix hit a springboard frog splash for a 2 count. Archer overpowered Fenix for a few minutes, including hitting a cannonball of his own on the floor. Fenix made a comeback and hit a flying double stomp on Archer, but Archer kicked out.

Fenix went for a fireman’s carry but Archer hit a German suplex. Archer overpower Fenix for a bit, but Fenix hit a running kick along the ropes and then hit a cutter on Arhcer, but Archer kicked out. This is following up on Archer simply kicking out of everything and just continuing to keep moving forward despite the offence of Fenix. Fenix managed to hit a Spanish Fy on Arhcer, which was incredible, but Archer powered out of a fireman’s carry again.

Fenix hit a massive set of kicks and chops and hit the ropes, but Archer hit a pounce and powerbombed Fenix into the corner and then killed him with a massive chokeslam, but Fenix kicked out. Archer picked up Fenix, finally hitting the Blackout for the pinfall victory. Archer advances to the ladder match at AEW Revolution.

This was a spectacular main event. Now Archer is moving one step closer to a TNT title match if he can win the ladder match at Revolution. Archer picked Fenix up and fist bumped him to close the show.

This was a very good episode of AEW Dynamite that build several matches for AEw Revolution in a clear, effective way. Moxley and Omega is clearly the biggest match on the card and got the best promotion, but every other match highlighted and tied into the stories being told. Every angle built towards what was next and heated up most of the programs in exactly the right way. This was an excellent 2 hours of wrestling, and AEW continues their streak of building to PPVs very well.
