Two-time NWA Heavyweight champion and nine-time WWE Tag Team Champion Christian Cage was the newest surprise signing by Tony Khan and All Elite Wrestling.

Christian had made an in-ring return with the WWE in the Royal Rumble in January of this year in a move that directly mirrored his tag partner’s own return to the world of wrestling after a lengthy exit. Unlike Edge, though, Christian was not seen on subsequent episodes of RAW or Smackdown and instead showed up on AEW’s Revolution Pay Per View.

The Captain of Charisma recently sat down with fellow WWE ex-colleague Rene Paquette on her Oral Sessions podcast to discuss just how his second great exodus from the WWE came to be.

“It all happened really quick,” Cage admitted. “I wasn’t sure how it was going to go after [the Royal Rumble] and all the talks that I had [with WWE] were very cordial. Obviously, I’m good friends with you and I’m good friends with your husband Jon. He talked to me and he had his opinions and stuff like that and it made me kind of think, ‘Okay, maybe I am doing myself a disservice if I don’t at least explore all my options.’ I ended up having a conversation with Tony and it just escalated very quickly. It went very fast. Within a week it was a done deal.”

He would go on to say during the interview with Paquette that at the time of Paul Wight’s (formerly The Big Show) announcement on Wednesday Night Dynamite, No formal contract had been signed but that the deal was done within days of that announcement.

Whether or not Cage will be utilized as a full-time talent like Chris Jericho or will fill a more typical “Legends” role with the promotion as both a backstage producer and on-screen manager is not currently known. Though he did say that he felt that AEW was the best place for him to wrestle and help the next generation of superstars.
