Tonight on AEW Dynamite, Kenny Omega will take on Matt Sydal in a match where if Sydal wins, he gets a title shot against Omega.

The show started hard with Kenny Omega’s entrance, and their lower third indicated that Omega has not lost a singles match in over 570 days. That’s how you book someone strongly.

Kenny Omega vs. Matt Sydal

This match, predictably, started fast. Lots of hard chops from Omega, and really clever counters by Sydal. The announcers, no pun intended, burned Don Calllis when he asked about the painting of him and Omega shirtless:

Don: Is the Kenny Omega/Don Callis shirtless painting on sale? Tony has one.
Tony: I actually burned that. Then I burned the ashes.
JR: Then charges were filed.

Omega took Sydal’s head off with a clothesline. Omega got some heat for the next little bit until Sydal countered a powerbomb with a kick to the face then a leg lariat. Sydal hit a hurricanrana and a Snow Plow for a 2-count. Omega slipped out of another hurricanrana attempt, and sent Sydal crashing legs first into the top rope, and then to the mat.

Sydal hit a lightning spiral on Omega for a 2 count after a kick to Omega. Omega countered a metora into a buckle bomb, which was insane. He then powerbombed him again, and hit the V-Trigger for a 2-count. Omega hit another V-Trigger, but Sydal countered with a poison rana.

Omega hit a running V-Trigger while Sydal was on the top ropes, and went for the One Winged Angel, but Sydal countered into a victory roll. Omega kicked out and hit an immediate V-Trigger and the One Winged Angel for the pinfall.

Result: Kenny Omega

Rating: ****1/4 (4.25 stars)

Fantastic opening match here, with Omega and Sydal showing what two top tier workers can do. Omega working as the “big man” worked well in this match, as he consistently used his power to stay on top of Sydal. Great match.

Alex Marvez was with the Dark Order, and John Silver practiced dodging Coffin Drops. Hangman wished him luck, and left for his match.

Cezar Bononi vs. Hangman Page

Bononi had a really impressive spot where he caught Hangman on a dive and slammed him on the apron. Bononi showed his power quite a bit here, tossing Hangman all over the place. Hangman hit an exploder suplex and then a Buckshot Lariat for the pinfall.

Result: Hangman Page

This was a quick squash, but Hangman still gave Bononi a lot here, and he looked good in what he did. Hangman, of course, came out looking way stronger.

Lance Archer talked about how he looked up to Sting, because he was part of why Archer was a wrestler. He said that it was his time now, and that when he comes face to face with Sting, it’s going to be showtime. This was a great promo.

They aired a recap of the Thunder Rosa vs. Britt Baker match, showing the violence both of them went through. Britt Baker was then out there with Tony Schiavone and buried the fans for not giving her a warm enough reception. She said that Thunder Rosa said she was the one who put the women on the map, but Baker asked why everyone was talking about her, and not Rosa.

Baker said that it took Mick Foley 20 years to become a hardcore legend, and she did it in one night, with 87 thumbtacks in her back, and blood flowing down her face, and she was the real biggest legend in AEW. She said she put AEW on the map, and those letters don’t matter as much as DMD.

Fantastic promo.

Christian was backstage with Griff Garrison, Brian Pillman Jr., and Dante Martin, and he said he was giving advice to them as they had a match The Pinnacle later. Frankie Kazarian came up and said that Christian hasn’t said hi to his old friend, and asked when Christian was actually going to start working, and Christian said next week, so the match is set: Christian Cage vs. Frankie Kazarian next week on AEW Dynamite.

The Pinnacle (FTR & Shawn Spears) w/ Tully Blanchard & MJF vs. Dante Martin & the Varsity Blondes

The young team took the first part of the match, working over Spears until Harwood tagged in and took Pillman’s head off with a clothesline. Pillman did make a comeback and tag out to Garrison, and all three went for a dive, but Wardlow got in the way. FTR and Spears got the heat Garrison for the next few minutes. Spears hit Martin with the C4 and pinned him.

Result: The Pinnacle

Wardlow got in the ring and beat down Pillman after the match. Schiavone interviewed them, and FTR talked about how the Pinnacle was the top group in the business, and Santana and Ortiz couldn’t hang with them. MJF said Jericho and his group were cowards who wouldn’t come out, and Schiavone pointed out that they were all hurt, and MJF intimidated him into backing down before promising that The Pinnacle would have gold soon.

Team Taz said that there was no problems in Team Taz, and Cage is perfectly okay with the group, and they just needed to talk it out.

QT Marshall talked about how he was frustrated, realizing that other than Tony Khan, no one was working harder behind the scenes than him, and he was tired of just being “Cody’s friend,” and he wanted to be known as more than that.

He said that he had to get out of Cody’s shadow, and he called for an exhibition between him and Cody next week, to prove that he belongs and can hang with the best, and he wasn’t going to take bumps while he was still in Cody’s shadow.

Cody came out with a production headset on, and his arm in a sling, because he is hurt, but he was going to give QT what he wants, with Arn Anderson as the referee. Cody, however, promised that he wasn’t going to hurt QT. He was going to release the Figure Four, or relinquish the Cross Rhodes, but he will accept the exhibition, friend to friend. QT accepted, but he didn’t look pleased at Cody’s kindness.

The Lucha Bros (Rey Fenix & Pentagon Jr.) & Laredo Kid vs. The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson) & Brandon Cutler

Fenix and Nick Jackson went to a stalemate early on, and the same happened to Matt Jackson and Pentagon. Laredo Kid broke the stalemate, and helped Fenix send the Bucks to the floor, and Pentagon hit a dive onto everyone. Cutler hit a tope con giro on everyone, and the Laredo Kid hit a huge moonsault to the floor.

Laredo Kid and the Lucha Bros showed some fantastic teamwork, constantly hitting double team and triple team moves on their opponents. Nick Jackson and Rey Fenix had an insane sequence that I can’t even begin to describe, and Matt Jackson hit a series of Northern Lights suplexes on Fenix and Pentagon before taking over for a bit.

Nick Jackson hit his run up the the turnbuckle and flip dive to the floor on Pentagon. Matt Jackson hit a DDT on Fenix on the apron, and then Laredo Kid hit a Spanish Fly on Cutler and pinned him.

Result: Laredo Kid & Lucha Bros

Rating: **** (4 stars)

Kenny Omega ran out and started beating on Laredo Kid, saying he remembered the first Fyter Fest with Kid, and then said he had a choice 3 years ago – he could have stayed at his home, with his family, with his fans. The easy answer was that he chose AEW, but that wasn’t true – he chose the Young Bucks.

He then said, tonight, they had a chance to choose him to be their tag partner today, to choose to hang out with the star quarterback, and they choose Brandon Cutler instead of him. He said the Bucks have never chosen him (which is a total lie, like good heels do), and asked them to throw up the Too Sweet.

The Bucks left him hanging, showing that they weren’t buying Kenny’s narrative and wouldn’t be guilted into compromising their morals. As Omega turned around, the Lucha Bros superkicked the mic into Kenny’s face, prompting Excalibur to say “How does it feel to get hit with a mic, Kenny?” in a great callback to what he did to Mox.

The Lucha Bros then hit a Package Piledriver/Double Stomp on Omega to leave him laying. The Good Brothers came out and helped Omega to his feet, and with his mouth bleeding, he gave a condescending thumbs up saying he was okay. This was perfect heel work from Omega.

Eddie Kingston and Moxley were backstage, and it turned out that Kingston broke his leg last week when the Good Brothers and Omega Pillmanized him. Kingston said that this wasn’t 6 years ago and wasn’t about selling T-shirts. Kingston tried to stand up, saying he was going to put them in the morgue, and how far they are willing to go. Jon Moxley finished the sentence for him, and then said that he wasn’t interested in the Bullet Club melodrama, but he guessed he owed the Young Bucks for saving him last week.

Moxley said that if they wanted to get involved in this war, then the Bucks better be willing to get their hands dirty against Omega and the Good Brothers.

This was so awesome. It’s setting up where we will eventually end up, and what was hinted a few months ago when the Bucks were wearing camo just like Moxley did. We will eventually see the Young Bucks & Moxley vs. Omega & the Good Brothers.

Nyla Rose vs. Tay Conti

Conti was supported by the Dark Order, here. Conti used judo and jiujitsu on Nyla early on to throw Nyla around the ring and go for submission attempts. Nyla was eventually able to use power to overcome the throws, and kept going back to that to stay in the match. Nyla locked on a camel clutch and then fish hooked Conti.

Vickie Guerrero paint brushed Tay Conti and Tay went out to attack. Nyla took advantage of this to attack, and then mocked Tay by dancing on the floor. Tay hit a jawbreaker on Nyla to break away from a submission, but Nyla hit a sidewalk slam. Tay blocked a senton by getting the knees up and hit several hard strikes before going for a DDTay, but Nyla blocked it.

Tay Conti hit a flying knee for a 2-count. Conti hit a series of kicks, and then two flying knees before finally hitting the DDTay for the pinfall.

Result: Tay Conti

Rating: *** (3 stars)

Conti got a huge win here, looking greatly improved. Conti’s strikes looked clean, and selling was top notch. Nyla worked very hard to make Conti look good, and it paid off well in a great match.

After the match, Nyla continued to assault Conti, but Hikaru Shida made the save, hitting Nyla with a kendo stick. The Bunny ran down and hit Shida with the cane, and Matt Hardy made his way out to ringside, continuing his war against the Dark Order by targeting Tay Conti now.

Hardy said that the women’s tournament was a sham because The Bunny wasn’t in it, and that would soon be rectified, as The Bunny and Nyla Rose take on Shida and Tay Conti next week.

Scorpio Sky cut a promo on Mike Sydal, who he is facing on AEW Dark: Elevation next Monday, saying that he wasn’t going to be overlooked anymore. Good promo here.

Darby Allin (c) vs. John Silver – TNT Championship

Both men started the match feeling each other out for the opening portions of the match, with Silver keeping the pace a little slower until he hit a huge pounce on Allin that sent him crashing to the floor. Silver then, quite literally, threw Darby all the way across the ring. Silver continued this for the next few minutes, beating Allin pillar to post.

Silver got Darby into the Tree of Woe and hit a series of kicks to the ribs and back of Darby before hitting a Gory Special into a neckbreaker on Allin for a 2-count. Allin sent Silver over the guardrail on the floor. Allin went to hit a suicide dive on Silver, but Alan Angels shoved him aside and ate the dive instead.

Silver hit a deadlift German suplex on Allin on the floor, which was insane. Sting came out and ran the rest of the Dark Order off, though they weren’t directly interfering outside of Angels shoving Silver aside. Allin tried to counter a suplex with his stunner, but Silver locked on the Queen Slayer, Anna Jay’s finisher, but Allin got out.

Silver and Allin kept exchanging strikes to the delight of the crowd and the announcers, as both men just kept countering and hitting harder. Allin countered a superplex from Silver, but did the Coffin Drop from the top rope onto the entire Dark Order. Allin went to the top rope again, and Silver hit a torture rack into a powerbomb off the top rope for a 2-count. That was insane. Allin countered Mr. Brodie’s powerbomb from Silver into a Code Red for the pinfall.

Result: Darby Allin

Rating: **** (4 stars)

This was an excellent, star making performance for John Silver. Allin continues his fantastic run of matches lately, and Silver looked like he could win it any second. I found myself hoping that Silver would win the more the match went on, which is a testament to his ability.

Matt Hardy pulled Allin from the ring and threw him into the guardrail as the Team Hardy Office ran down and attacked Dark Order. Sting and Allin cleared the ring, and Allin hit a dive on Hardy and started brawling with him as the show went off the air. Great way to close the show, leaving us wanting more.

Show Rating: **** (4 stars)

AEW continues their streak of having a fantastic television show again this week, with storylines advancing, new stars being highlighted, and intriguing possibilities for the future. Moxley and Kingston are looking for blood, while the Bucks and Omega continue to be fractured in their relationship. The Lucha Brothers and Laredo Kid got a huge win, and the Dark Order looked strong on all fronts tonight.

This was a very good episode of AEW Dynamite.
