WWE NXT results: Kyle O’Reilly defeats Cameron Grimes
After a big introduction to Tuesday nights last week, another edition of WWE NXT was set for wrestling fans. This week featured the return of Kyle O’Reilly since his battle with Adam Cole at NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver, the debut of Sarray competing against Zoey Stark, an open challenge by new NXT cruiserweight champion, KUSHIDA.
The night started with O’Reilly, walking down to the ring with something to say. O’Reilly talked about what was next for him and going after either of the men’s singles titles on the table. Before he could finish, Cameron Grimes came out with something to add. They were all chummy at first until O’Reilly made it clear that he was looking for a fight after laying Grimes out with a right hand.
The first match of the night was a singles affair between LA Knight and Dexter Lumis. Lumis shrugged off Knight’s offense at the start of the match but was soon dropped by a big kick to the chest. Knight remained in control for much of the match initially, throwing Lumis from the ring twice. Even when they ended up back in the ring, Knight’s offense continued to overwhelm Lumis.
Lumis found the way to fight back after a big spinebuster and getting on a roll with much more after that. Lumis returned the favor in dropping Knight outside the ring, but Knight took advantage of the distraction that came from Indi Hartwell’s presence. As Lumis attempted to climb back into the ring, Knight planted him face-first into the mat to pick up the win.
LA Knight defeated Dexter Lumis via pinfall.
The next match out was tag team action as the Grizzled Young Veterans took on Breezango. Breezango got the first advantage, knocking GYV from the ring but once the bell rang Zack Gibson put a beating on Tyler Breeze. Fandango came in to turn things around, but it did not take long for Gibson to cut his momentum off as well. Things changed with James Drake in the ring and Breezango began to roll, ending with Fandango hitting a dive onto GYV outside the ring.
Breezango continued to roll until Drake faked being injured, allowing Gibson to attack Fandango, isolating him on their side of the ring. Fandango fought back and eventually got over to Breeze who let go on both opponents. He put up a great fight, but it was just a few minutes until he was hit with the Ticket to Mayhem, giving GYV the big win.
Grizzled Young Veterans defeated Breezango by pinfall.
Zoey Stark was up to welcome Sarray to the NXT women’s division. The two women lock up in a test of strength to start the match, with Stark getting the advantage. That was until Sarray started to tie her up into knots, forcing Stark to use the rope break. Stark was able to take back over, stomping the smaller woman in the corner.
The two women ended up exchanging blows in the middle of the ring, with neither getting over the other until Sarray landed a pair of stiff dropkicks. Stark responded with a heel kick, half-and-half suplex and sliding knee but Sarray kicked out of the pin. Sarray was able to finish Stark off when she landed a big kick of her own, followed by a package suplex for the victory.
Sarray defeated Zoey Stark via pinfall.
KUSHIDA’s open challenge was up next against an unknown opponent for the NXT Cruiserweight title. That challenge was answered by Oney Lorcan.
The two men went straight to the mat where Lorcan showed he can keep up with KUSHIDA’s grappling chops. KUSHIDA locked on an armbar, but Lorcan fought out. KUSHIDA continued to dominate, knocking Lorcan off the top rope and to the outside.
Lorcan did not stay on the defensive forever, landing a knee to the midsection and eventually hitting a nasty uppercut. Lorcan went back to the grappling, but KUSHIDA was able to fight back. KUSHIDA was rolling but Lorcan landed another uppercut into a blockbuster but still could not pin the champion. KUSHIDA landed a series of strikes that dropped Lorcan, leading directly into the Hoverboard Lock for the victory.
KUSHIDA defeated Oney Lorcan via submission.
Ever-Rise were up for tag team action and they were competing against Imperium.
Imperium jumped all over Matt Martel quickly. Battering both men quickly. Ever-Rise attempted to fight back but did not have much to offer. Killian Dain and Drake Maverick came down to ringside, nearly starting a fight. But that did not stop Imperium from hitting a big tandem technique to pick up the victory.
Imperium defeated Ever-Rise via pinfall.
The main event of the evening was O’Reilly versus Grimes.
O’Reilly went to his submission game immediately, grounding Grimes to start the match. Grimes was able to turn the tables off a headlock takedown, which gave him the momentum to get some offense off his own. O’Reilly continued to switch up from striking and grappling to control the match, but that did not stop Grimes from fighting back.
Grimes turned things around after hitting a somersault over O’Reilly into a German Suplex, sending O’Reilly tumbling from the ring. Grimes used that opportunity to pick up his assault over O’Reilly, beating him around the ring. Grimes continued to focus on O’Reilly’s neck and shoulder, but he would not stop fighting.
O’Reilly fought back onto the offensive, nearly locking into a heel hook before Grimes could roll to the ropes. They continued to exchange big moves, but neither man could get the pin. Grimes landed a Spanish Fly but was still unable to get the win. O’Reilly landed a brain buster, then went to top to finish off Grimes with a knee drop, picking up the victory.
